Driving quality through automation
Multipix Imaging, machine vision specialists..explain why
Procter & Gamble chose In-Sight Smart Cameras to improve quality control

The Challenge: Reduce the risk and cost of production
Procter & Gamble's manufacturing plant is operating multiple packing lines, three shifts, seven days a week. They manufacture more than 50 detergent types ranging from 13gm to 4kg in size - all packaged in similar laminate colours.

They must ensure that both the correct detergent types are wrapped with the correct laminate and that the correct maximum retail price (MRP) is printed correctly on each package. If the wrong MRP is printed, it could lead to retailers over or under pricing products, which could affect profit margins.

They conducted two separate rounds of inspection and verification manually to:
  • Ensure that the right laminate packaging was placed on the right packing lines
  • Determine that the MRPs for the respective laminates were printed correctly

This process was not only time consuming, but also brought with it the risk of human error by performing the inspections manually. Proctor & Gamble needed an alternative solution to manual inspection to reduce both the risk and cost of production.

Production Line
The Solution: A vision system that inspects & verifies - right every time!

Cognex In-Sight smart cameras wereo integrate with the packing machinery for a reliable, flexible solution that meets the demanding needs of laminate packing on their production line.

The Cognex In-Sight camera enabled them to:
  • Inspect and verify the ID and MRP codes printed on the laminates through Optical Character Verification (OCV) technology
  • Read the ID and MRP codes, regardless of their positions on the package, using patented PatMax® pattern matching technology
  • Ensure the right laminates have been placed on the right packing lines
  • Ensure the correct MRPs are indicated on the respective laminates
  • Match the reference ID and MRP codes from the vision systems against those supplied by the packing machine's Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) through Ethernet communication
The increased accuracy of machine vision has enabled Protor & Gamble to reliably avoid laminate mix-ups and eliminate hourly manual check lists to ensure that the correct laminates are loaded on each of the 22 machines on the packing lines.
Why do major manufacturers use In-Sight vision systems?
Across the globe companies are using In-Sight vision systems to improve quality control and the performance of their production lines, reducing risk and cost.
