Solar greybeards are well aware of John Berdner. He's the guy who brought us quality German SMA inverters in the very early grid-tie days when the American inverter manufacturers were suffering 100% failure rates.  John is back with a new inverter brand to shake up our industry, and based on existing track record, we'd do well to pay attention. This product is a game changer.

The SolarEdge system puts the best of traditional string inverters and the best of individual module inverters in a package that's better than either. Like Enphase or Tigo systems, there's a PowerBox on each module to make the best of partial shading or other challenges. SolarEdge PowerBoxes have an advantage that they can adjust voltage and amperage output of each module to make the most power under current conditions. Like a traditional string inverter there are strings of PV modules, but strings can be from 8 to 24 modules, and multiple strings do not have to match. Want one string of 19 modules and one string of 15? Can do. Because the voltage delivered to the inverter is always constant, the transformerless SolarEdge inverter can be much simpler, lighter, and lower cost. Thanks to long strings, PV Combiners are rarely needed on residential SolarEdge systems. Two strings are plenty. CEC efficiency is a record 97.5% on 240vac (97.0% on 208vac).

A state-of-the-art Web-enabled monitoring package is standard equipment with all SolarEdge systems. It will provide detailed module, string, and array monitoring at no charge for 3 years.   

For perfect arrays with no shading, string sizing, or orientation challenges, traditional string inverters still make slightly lower cost systems. Although they do take a small hit on CEC efficiency. But if you have an array with shading, stringing, or multiple orientation challenges, the SolarEdge system is probably your best bet for strong performance.

At this time, single-phase inverters in 3, 4, 5, or 6kW sizes are available with a standard 12-year warranty. Three-phase units in 8, 10, and 12.5kW sizes will be available later this year.
