Car Crash

A software engineer, hardware engineer and company division manager were on their way to a meeting in Switzerland. They were driving down a steep mountain road when suddenly the brakes failed. The car careened out of control, bouncing off guard rails until it ground to a halt along the mountainside. The occupants were unhurt, but stuck halfway down the mountain in a car with no brakes.

"I know," said the manager. "Let's have a meeting, propose a Vision, formulate a Mission Statement, define some Goals, and through a process of continuous improvement, find a solution to the Critical Problems, and we'll be on our way."

"No," said the hardware engineer. "I've got my Swiss army knife with me. I can strip down the car's braking system, isolate the fault, fix it, and we'll be on our way."

"Wait," said the software engineer. "Before we do anything, shouldn't we push the car back to the top of the mountain and see if it happens again?"

Tools of the Trade February 2012
Greetings!

Wow, we are already halfway through February of 2012!  Time flies when you are having fun.  I have had the newsletter on my desk for a while now and just happened to look up to notice it was February already and I missed January!

So what is new with us this month?  The NEW Geomatic Resources website should be rolled out in a few weeks.  You will absolutely want to keep an eye out for that.  Imagine the old CDS website but a hundred times better!  We are all excited internally and know you will love the changes as well.

We are moving along pretty steadily on our end and continuing to be the absolute best we can be.  Right now we are fully equipped from stakes to software and everything in between and can handle your needs whatever they may be.  Want to talk GPS, talk to one of our experts.  Want to know why you should be using Machine Control, talk to our experts.  Want to know why you should be scanning instead of taking mass amounts measurements the old way, talk to our expert.  We don't just sell stuff, we are experts with what we carry.  If you have been thinking about something give us a call and let us answer your questions and help you make the best decision you can for your business.

This is what I love most about this transition.  The philosophies that I held dear while running Carlson Desktop Solutions are the same philosophies held by the staff at Geomatic Resources.  Very little has changed from what we did then to what we do now, except we have a broader product offering and a stronger team to support what we do.  My background in software fits in nicely and really adds that extra strength to the team.

Enough about us though, what is new with you?  I have gotten a few calls lately from people who have moved to new companies and a few that have started new businesses.  If something has changes, please make sure to let me know!  I always like keeping up with where you are and what is new.  I am also trying to keep myself in the office a little more and making myself more available for you to just drop by and say hello.  While I like being busy  and running around like a mad man, I enjoy more being able to catch my breath and catch up with old friends.  So with that said, please drop me an email pc@geotx.com or give me a call and let me know what is new with you!

I am working on software classes and seminars for next year including Carlson SurvCE, Leica Viva!, Leica Cyclone, and a few others.  If you have something specific you would like to see please send me an email and let me know!  There is nothing I like less than scheduling classes and seminars that nobody wants or needs!

So until next month, Happy Valentine's Day, Happy Mardi Gras and stay busy!  I look forward to seeing or hearing from you soon and seeing what we can do together in 2012~

Sincerely,
Paul M. Carlson

Tips & Tricks

question We scanned a project and have millions of points and images of the site.  So now what?

answer stamp Let me start by asking the same questions you asked your client and your staff before you purchased a scanner and collected all of this information.  What do you want?  See when we acquired GPS or total stations we did it because either our clients had expectations or we set new expectations based on what we could now do.  In scanning I think we forget that and are caught trying to provide the same results with out making any changes (you know, a two dimensional line drawing that represents the site).  We are missing out on what the scanner can really do and what we can actually do with all of this data.  There is so much potential to what the scanner can offer us and our clients and we have to stop looking at using it to do what we always did and look for ways to do what we always did better, or look at new things we can do.  One such example of this is the Truviews created in Leica Cyclone.  This is a deliverable I can give my client that allows them to see the photographs and then mark up and print from the point cloud!  Watch the video below.
