Using SurvCE with GPS

Working with DEM files
Boudreaux

A salesman from the big city is down in Houma Louisiana for a conference and decides to treat himself to a nice Cajun meal.  He sees a restaurant that is packed which is always a good sign and goes in and is seated promptly.  His waiter, Boudreaux introduces himself and tells him about the specials for the night.  The guy looks at Boudreaux not really understanding what he just said and asked how they prepare their chicken.  Boudreaux replies , "There's nothin' special... we just flat out tell' em they're gonna die".

Tools of the Trade September 2010
Greetings!

I am finally getting a few days to take a breath and catch up, or at least try to.  I have been meeting with clients for consulting, training, demonstrations and catching up for the last 4 or 5 weeks.  I am booked for the next few weeks and then TSPS, and AGC are just around the corner in October.

While I have not seen a huge turn around I have seen more clients getting a little breathing room and even a few with more work than they know what to do with.  Many are looking for smarter, faster, easier ways to do more with less so I have been doing a lot of consulting lately to make that happen.

Consulting?  CDS does Consulting?  Yes, and we have since day 1 back in April of 2007.  The solutions such as software or training are only a piece of what we can do for our clients.  We want to make you a well oiled machine and help you get the most out of what you have.  This month's Tech Tip is a perfect example of that.

If you missed the presentations I did with Carlson Software this month on their Thursday Webinar series I have posted links for those on the sidebar.  The first was about using SurvCE with GPS and the second about working with DEM files inside of Carlson.  Check them out, and also make sure to check out my blog as well as the videos I put out on Youtube.

The bottom line is that we are here to help you find ways to improve your bottom line and we have been committed to doing so since day one.  Keep checking our site for information, keep reading this newsletter, keep reading our blog and watching our videos, and call me when you are ready to move to the next step.

Now, I can not leave out the most important part of this letter which is a reminder that it is September.  September means football, and football is a good thing!  So Gig 'em, shoot 'em up, Roll Tide, go Vols...or as we say here in the capital...Hook 'Em!

Until next month, stay safe and best wishes!

Sincerely,
Paul M. Carlson
CDS - President

question We are hearing more and more companies asking for point cloud data and we are seeing more and more software programs for working with them, but really what can we actually do with a point cloud and why would we want to use it?

answer stamp I feel like Horshack jumping out of my seat with my hand raised yelling "OOOOOOHHHHH! OOOOOOHHHHH! OOOOOOHHHHH! "  Over the past few weeks I have been working closely with our sister company Geomatic Resources and the Leica Scanstation C10.  With the scan comes the data which is where I come in to answer that very question.  What can we do with the data?

There are many 3rd party programs out there and the manufacturers of the scanners have their own programs built for working with the data as well.  Leica has Cyclone which is an independent program or they have CloudWorx which is an add-on to AutoCAD.  I just read an article this morning about a program from MicroSurvey, and of course Carlson Software has a Point Cloud program and even Civil 3D has Point Cloud capabilities.

What I have found so far is that there are many methods for dealing with the massive amounts of data produced and different clouds, circumstances, and situations call for different applications or even a combination of applications.  Keep in mind that some of this data may be proprietary so using a program from the manufacturer may be required to some level.   Click here to watch a video I put together on what you can do with scan data now that you have it.
