Tools of the Trade July 2010

Greetings!
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. Happy Independence Day, and what is more a more analogous of this day than the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence itself!
It is hard to believe it is summer already and we are yet again halfway through another year. I have to admit every time I forget I step outside and the blistering heat reminds me that once again summer is upon us. Whether you are working or playing outside make sure to drink plenty of water and do what you can to stay cool. You can check out this blog for more tips on how to stay cool in the heat of the summer.
While there is still no overwhelming sign that everything is back to normal, there are signs that things are improving in some areas. I have heard, read, and seen many new projects kicking off here in the Austin area and throughout Texas. I hope you are seeing your work load increase as well.
Keep in mind that we are here to help you in any and every way we can. If you need training or just want us to provide consultative advice or ideas we are here for you. If you need help creating data such as 3D models or layout data we can do that as well. I am always en email or a phone call away.
For all of those who helped in my MDA fund-raising drive I would like to
once again say thank you. Your support not only for me, but for this
great cause means a lot to me and I can not thank you enough. I have
posted more information on that drive here in this newsletter and for
those who didn't get a chance to make a contribution there is still
time!

Tips & Tricks
We need more data! In the old days we could get away with providing just what the client needed and anything else required more money from them so often times they stayed away from it. Today everyone wants more and more and more but because there is so much free information out there they do not want to pay us for recreating it. How can we use the data out there, add it to what we are using and simply get paid for preparing what is available?
I know exactly what you mean. Because the data is out there everyone assumes all you have to do is grab it and move on and it takes you no time to find it, process it, and add it to what you are doing. The good news is that with the amount of information available you often times do not have to go out and add more survey to the job. You simply need to add more data.
But remember, you should charge for that time of finding and preparing that for them. That is why we charge for support and training, it takes us time and money to learn all of this stuff and present it back. It is cheaper to obtain this data and make it presentable than it is to go survey these large areas, but there is still a cost associated with that

Carlson Explorer gone the way of the Dodo bird? While
CDS has never carried/stocked the explorers and tried to encourage our clients
to explore options such as the Juniper Allegro it was hard for many to pass on the low price of the Explorer. Carlson Software has announced they are no longer stocking the Explorers and Explorer

ESRI Builds Animated Map of Gulf Oil Slick Timeline This animated map from ESRI shows the locations of the oil slick in the
Gulf of Mexico for each day since April 25, when the slick was first
measured. It also shows an oil slick projection, as well as locations
