Class
| Law Enforcement Data Collection/Processing
| | I am preparing a class in July for data collection/processing for Law Enforcement. The class will focus on collection techniques and processing techniques involving multiple sources of data. Want to combine a GPS position with data from a total station and measurements from a laser, then this may be for you. More details to come, or email me if you are interested. |
Made WHERE?
|
| Joe Smith started the day early having set his alarm clock (MADE IN
JAPAN) for 6 a.m. While his coffee pot (MADE IN CHINA) was perking, he
shaved with his electric razor (MADE IN HONG KONG). He put on a dress
shirt (MADE IN SRI LANKA), designer jeans (MADE IN SINGAPORE) and tennis
shoes (MADE IN KOREA). After cooking his breakfast in his new electric skillet (MADE IN
INDIA) he sat down with his calculator (MADE IN MEXICO) to see how much
he could spend today. After setting his watch (MADE IN TAIWAN) to the
radio (MADE IN INDIA) he got in his car (MADE IN GERMANY) and continued
his search for a good paying AMERICAN JOB. At the end of yet another
discouraging and fruitless day, Joe decided to relax for a while. He put
on his sandals (MADE IN BRAZIL) poured himself a glass of wine (MADE IN
FRANCE) and turned on his TV (MADE IN INDONESIA), and then wondered why
he can't find a good paying job in.....AMERICA.....

Tools of the Trade June 2010
|
Greetings!
With many of our clients and colleagues having served in the military, and my youngest brother currently serving in the Air Force I would like to take this time to wish everyone a Happy Memorial day and thank each of you serving or that have served. Thank you for your service to our country and for all you did, do, and will do.
I can't believe it is June already! I have mixed feelings about this
month; the kids are out of school, the weather is warming up, it is time
to start BBQing more, nearing the end of tolerable golf weather, etc...
I have been out doing more training and consulting the last 30 days and have worked with clients all over the place. This has given me a better view of what is happening out there and I am seeing positive trends. I am seeing more work than this time last year, but we are still seeing people trying to do more with less. In the long run for companies this may be a good thing, but short term it is not helping the job situation much. I will keep my fingers crossed that we are on the right track though and we are all seeing positive things this summer.
If you took the poll I posted last month you may have found some of the questions odd, but I put them up there for a reason and thank all of those who took the time to answer the poll. I was surprised to know how many people think our company is part of Carlson software even though I have tried to do a good job of drawing that distinction. CDS is not owned or part of Carlson Software in any way shape form or fashion. In fact if you purchase your software from anyone but else it does not help our business one bit. Many people also did not know the other items we carry and support which include Autodesk, Altus GPS and other surveying and construction related items.
While we do have those other items our main focus is on training, consulting and support. This week I did training for a construction company on how to use their total station and data collector to layout their project. Even though they purchased it elsewhere they have come to rely on our high level of expertise and support. We are happy to provide support or training on any of these items through either a day of on-site training or an annual support contract. If you are interested in learning more give me a call or send me an email.
In the mean time, keep checking our blog, following our tweets, reading our facebook posts and watching our secure content section for all sorts of helpful information.
Have a great June, and I hope you have more work than you can keep up with!
Sincerely, Paul M. Carlson CDS - President

Tips & Tricks
What do we do when the network is down?
Simple, straight to the point, and serious. I love it! One of the mistakes we see companies make is they forget to be Boy Scouts (always be prepared). In an effort to save a little money we often do not get back ups such as extra batteries, cables, etc... This cost cutting usually ends up costing you more than you saved when everything goes down.
The same thing applies to working on GPS Reference Networks. We assume that this simple solution that saves us thousands of dollars is a perfect end all answer and while it is great it is not the total solution. Click here to read more.
