Land Survey
|
| Surveyors came to Ole's farm in the fall and asked if they could do some
surveying.
Ole agreed and Lena even served them a nice meal at
noon time.
The next spring, the two surveyors stopped by and
told Ole, "Because you were so kind to us, we wanted to give you this
bad news in person instead of by letter.
Ole replied, "What's
the bad news?
The surveyors stated, "Well, after our work we
discovered your farm is not in Iowa, but is actually in South Dakota!"
Ole looked at Lena and said," That's the best news I have heard in
a long time, why I just told Lena this morning, I don't think I can
take another winter in Iowa."

Tools of the Trade May 2010
|
Greetings!
May brings all sorts of fun, the Kentucky Derby, baseball, and most importantly May is National BBQ month! I hope you get a chance to enjoy some of all of that this month.
We talked in the last newsletter about changes and things we are doing to keep you informed and current. I asked as I usually do if there is anything more we can do for you. This month I have something to ask from you, two things actually. First I am going to include a link to a VERY short questionnaire or on-line poll. If you have a minute or two to spare and would not mind, please go take the poll which will provide valuable feedback to me.
Second, if we have done something that just absolutely helped you out of a tough spot, or saved you money, or really went above and beyond the normal call of duty, tell us. I have been trying to add a page to our website that contains comments and statements from our clients since we started this company in 2007 and am finally going to do it. I would love to have a recommendation from you to put on our page.
I guess I actually have three things to ask for, I am starting to feel like that scene from "The Jerk". I need the poll, the recommendation and a referral, and that is all. Yes a referral, if you think this newsletter is of value simply forward it to a friend. If you think the information in our blog is helpful pass it on to someone who might need it. I would love to get our facebook page to 100 followers, and with your help we can do that and more!
Now back to what I do best, how can I help you? We have been putting some videos on youtube so you can check those out. The other thing I want to offer for May is for anyone interested. I am going to offer 1 hour web based Q&A sessions. All you have to do is send me an email stating you want one of these FREE web Q&A sessions with a couple of dates and times that work for you and I will handle the rest.
This will give you the opportunity to pick my brain and get some of those questions answered that have been eating away at you and possibly reducing productivity. These will not be grouped together with other companies and will all be one-on-one (your company and mine). Maybe we make it interesting, if you take the poll, send a recommendation, AND get 5 friends to join us on facebook we will make it two hours!
Until next time, have a great month and don't forget to enjoy some BBQ!
Sincerely, Paul M. Carlson CDS - President

Tips & Tricks
We are using an Altus APS-3 base/rover system with the internal radios. We have a fixed height 2m Rover Pole and a standard tripod for our base. With the "ARP" being at the bottom of the receiver what is the best way to measure this and get consistent results.
With a total station the height of the instrument is usually
measured to the height of the "eye" or the center of the optic which makes it
relatively simple. With GPS there is no
optic, only an imaginary plane that is used to determine elevation by figuring
the distance from the ground to this plane. Ok, maybe it is not imaginary, but the phase center measurements are neither
physical positions nor stable points.
The phase center is variable on any GPS receiver
based on directional signal information from satellites. These variations
affect the antenna offsets used to connect the measurement to the position
being recorded. To handle this, the
National Geodetic Survey calibrates each receiver model creating a measurement
between the receiver phase center and it's antenna reference point (ARP). When we plug in the height of the receiver to
our data collector we key in the measurement from our point to the ARP. Click here to read more.
