Field Day

Come see how we do Field to Finish at our Field Day in Austin Thursday July 9, 2009.
Greetings!

WOW!  We began planning an  event here in Austin next week (Thursday July 9) to show how you can move a project from Field to Finish and expected a small turn out.  We have over 20 people signed up now and have moved to another venue to accommodate everyone!  For a map to the new location please click here.

This really gets me excited, and it will make me work harder for all of those coming.  This should be one of the best classes/seminars we have done yet and I thank everyone who has signed up.  If you have not paid yet, remember to either call and put the fee on a credit card or bring a check with you at the time of the event, all payments must be made before or at the time time of arival.

I want to wish you a very happy and safe Independence Day.  Enjoy the time away from work, enjoy the BBQ and the beer, but most of all spend time with the ones you love.

"O! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust.'
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!"

Sincerely,
Paul M. Carlson

question To localize, or not to localize...that is the question.

answer stamp First, why do we even need to localize (or Calibrate as some call it)?  GPS works in WGS-84. Often survey control data is in some other local datum such as NAD83. Where WGS-84 is an ellipsoid and vertical data is tied to some geoid model, local datums are planar. The purpose of the localization/calibration is to tie the ellipsoid and planar datums together with a "best fit". This is particularly true for vertical where the geoid model will likely not have enough resolution to give high accuracy for vertical measurements.

Often times the Localization is also used to "align" your data and the ground together, or make the data you have "fit" the real world conditions.  The majority of ALL construction companies using GPS should be localized on their sites because even if the original survey is done on the grid, the design and subsequent data is often not done on the grid and is often times not even in any true coordinate system.  The localization allows you to say, " I do not care what the difference is, this coordinate from my drawing is located "HERE" on the ground.  By assigning 4,5 or even 6 of those points to ground locations you gain that best fit which translates and rotates the ground and the data together so that you are now calibrated or localized on your site.

In SurvCE you can localize during the base setup by beginning from a known position.  This creates a one point, or single point localization from the base.  Your rotation will be to geodetic north, but your coordinates are now translated and scaled appropriately.  You can also do your localization using the rover.  If we were on a GPS RTK network for example we could localize all of our control using our rovers and now have the data "fit" the ground.
