POWER7 IS CATCHING ON FAST!
As a result of the article in the last newsletter, there have been many inquiries from customers seeking more information. For each inquiry, MCS composed a customized analysis showing the capabilities of the installed server vs. a Power6 server and a Power7 server. The analysis will also show the cost of the hardware, software, hardware & software maintenance, and a 3 year TCO (Total Cost of Ownership).
The analysis proves that doing nothing costs more than upgrading to a Power6 server or replacing with a Power7 server. How is that possible? 1) Power7 hardware and software costs are very inexpensive; 2) The Power7 server comes with a 3 year hardware warranty; 3) Hardware and software maintenance are much less expensive on Power7; 4) End of year discounts and promotions.
A copy of an actual customer analysis is available for your review, just click HERE. The customer's name has been removed and the serial# of the installed server is X'ed out. But, the actual IBM Configurator output is available upon request. In this real example, the customer saved more than $15,000 over 3 years by replacing an installed iSeries model 520 with a Power 720 and got a faster server with much more capacity. DB2 Web Query Enhancements
The new DB2 Web Query enhancements extend the reporting environment by providing stronger integration points with commonly used applications. Clients looking for a single query and report writing solution are now able to incorporate simpler access to data stored in DB2 for i databases by Oracle's JD Edwards applications seamlessly through the new adapter.
The Adapter for Oracle JD Edwards allows DB2 Web Query to access data in the application's databases with seamless recognition of user-defined codes and decimal data masked by the application data dictionary. Date fields are standardized, and security defined in the application is adhered to by DB2 Web Query processes.
DB2 V1.1.2 offers an upgrade to the existing level of DB2 Web Query that includes several new functions, including a component called InfoAssist. This highly intuitive environment shields users from the underlying technical complexities associated with ad hoc reporting features, while providing access to all the functionality needed to address mission-critical information requirements. This powerful ad hoc reporting tool enables rapid and efficient design and deployment of reports and charts. It uses an interactive and fully customizable WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) development environment. Users receive instant feedback throughout the development process to ensure that reports and charts are properly built.
The new level of DB2 Web Query V1.1.2 also offers several enhancements around usability, performance, security, and administration. A sampling of new functions includes:
Ability to include interactive Flash reports, dashboards, and animations in PDF documents Developer Workbench feature enhancements, including improved modeling views, creation of rich Internet applications with the HTML composer, and additional functions and data type support in synonyms Query performance improvements such as optimizing requests against multiple fact tables with shared dimension tables The IBM DB2 Web Query Application Extensions are a set of IBM Lab Services offerings that reduce the programming complexity and provide a higher abstraction layer to make it very easy to implement customized DB2 Web Query applications. Built on (and required on the development system) the DB2 Web Query Software Development Kit (5733-QU4), the Application Extensions allow you to quickly develop an application without complex coding. Underlying the Application Extensions is a set of web services provided by the SDK that invoke DB2 Web Query functions. Any application that runs on either IBM i or can access the system, regardless of whether its written in C++, C#, VB.NET, Java, or even RPG and COBOL, can invoke these web services. Clients that have an existing software maintenance agreement for DB2 Web Query can obtain Version 1.1.2 at no charge as part of that agreement. If software maintenance for DB2 Web Query has lapsed, in can be reinstated without an After License Fee (ALF) penalty. Version 1.1.2 will ship with all new orders of DB2 Web Query.
