| A Smarter Planet means Smarter Software. | |
Software is becoming a strategic business asset for every company. no matter what they produce. The makers of products have to become just as proficient in systems integration and software development as they have been in product design and manufacturing. They will need to manage their software as a core process, applying the sames levels of discipline and expertise that they bring to customer relationships, finance and produt life cycle management for example. For instance, how does a company manage and integrate software across a complex, expanding supply chain when more and more components are sourced from different locations, arrive with software already embedded and are assembled in various combinations? Product development cycles are being challenged by the integration of mechanical, electronic and software technologies into the design process. This all requires new levels of interoperability and that means software. New software applications can take manual processes that you think are working well and automate them leading to improved product deadlines, improved suppliers demands, reliable data and lower costs. Smarter ways, make smarter products which means a smarter software.

Are You Paying Too Much For Server Hardware and Software Maintenance? | |
IBM recently announced the POWER7 Express line of servers for IBM i with dramatic improvements in price/performance over previous POWER server models. The new servers also come with a 3 year hardware warranty, where previous servers only had a 3 month or 1 year warranty. If your current IBM i Server is at least 3 years old, you can probably cost justify an upgrade or replacement with a POWER7 server with 2 to 3 years of hardware maintenance savings. How is that possible? Here is an example. One of our customers installed a model 520 in 2007. The monthly maintenance on this server is $584. The customer can replace the server with a POWER7 model 720 at a cost of $18,329. The breakeven point on this transaction is 32 months. With the new server, the customer will get 400% more CPU capacity, 400% more disk, and 100% more memory. The cost also includes an LTO5 tape drive. Software maintenance will also be much lower on the POWER7 model 720 since it is in the P05 software tier while the model 520 is in the P20 software tier. One year 24x7 SWMA contracts are $1,428 for P05 and $5,051 for P20. If you add SWMA savings to hardware maintenance savings, the breakeven point becomes just 21 months. ERP customers can get an even better deal. IBM offers reduced OS license fees for users of selected ERP applications, which includes INFOR A+, with the POWER7 Solution Edition. Lowering operating costs, increasing server capacities and great deals for ERP customers make this THE TIME to find out if an upgrade or replacement server is right for you.
