New IBM Power Equation: Power = 'i + p'
 IBM Power Equation
Twenty years ago IBM merged their S/36 and S/38 divisions to create the AS/400 platform. The System/38 Operating System became the basis for OS/400 with S/36 applications running in an 'S/36 Environment' guest OS on the new shared hardware.

History is repeating itself as in April 2008 IBM announced that their System i and System p divisions would merge into the IBM Power Systems. Both Systems i and p would retain their own operating systems (IBM i and AIX), but run on a shared hardware platform called 'Power'. The new Power Systems run on the Power 6 CPU in either V5R4 or V6R1 for IBM i.

Please contact MCS Certified IBM i Sales Specialist, Steve Kurzban at 631-738-0500 x111 or SteveK@maximumcomputer.com to discuss whether a new Power model will suit your needs.

Cumulative PTF Packages

Cumulative PTF packages are the primary method of performing preventive maintenance for specific releases of the i5/OS and OS/400 operating systems and IBM licensed programs. This type of fix package contains fixes generally recommended by IBM and is updated on a periodic basis.

Cumulative PTF packages are labeled according to the year, Julian date, and operating system software version. For example, Cumulative PTF package C1092450 can be broken down as follows:

- 1 represents the Year (2001)
- 092 represents the Julian Date without the year
- 450 represents the OS/400 version V4R5

To identify your current PTF level, do the following from any command line. Type DSPPTF LICPGM (5722SS1) and hit enter. Using the logic above look at the first PTF ID that show ups. For example TC08057, ignoring the TC this PTF is from Year 08 Julian date 057. If this date is more than 3 months old chances are there is a more up to date cumulative PTF package.

Quick Tips: APLUS Reference Commands

Simply key-in the command on the command line:

APCHKUSR - displays the number of user licenses and current users signed onto APLUS

APJOBS - displays the APLUS TP (transaction processor jobs) - typically batch jobs updating the APLUS master files process through the TP

APLUSLVL - displays the APLUS release level

APMAIL - displays the APLUS mail inquiry

APMSG - processes the APLUS message screen that displays incoming message and allows you to send messages to others on the system

LAYOUT - processes a formatted file layout report - i.e.: LAYOUT ITMST - prints a user friendly file listing for the Item Master file

LAYOUT2 - processes a formatted file layout on the screen instead of a report

In-use Records

Occasionally records stay in-use if the user session ends abnormally or there is a power failure. APLUS has unlock logic built into many programs to prevent record locking and contention issues. Unlock logic allows the in-use workstation to access the record.

To find the device or workstation use the option on the XAMAST menu - Display Internal Device IDs

To remove in-use codes from sales orders and work orders - CALL UNUSEP

To remove in-use codes from POINT OF SALE orders - CALL UNUSEPOSP
