Spring 10 Graduation Greetings!

Welcome to the Alumni e-Newsflash-- the best way to stay up-to-date on alumni news and events! 

This year's Spring Commencement welcomed over 400 graduates to the Alumni Association. Be sure to show up at an alumni event in your area to meet some new faces and catch up with some familiar ones.

Upcoming Summer Events, Ahoy!  
 
The Office of Alumni Relations will be hitting the road this summer to host chapter events and gatherings.
 
July 15
The First Coast Chapter will host a networking happy hour at Cellar 6 in downtown St. Augustine from 5:30-7:30pm. Complimentary appetizers, $2 draft beers, and $5 glasses of wine will be offered.
 
July 31
New England Alumni will enjoy a traditional clam and lobster boil at the home of Russel '79 and Laurie Brule from 2-6pm in Massachusetts. RSVP today.
 
August 5
The Sun Coast Chapter event will be hosted by Nancy Rutland '80 in her St. Petersburg home from 6-8pm. Special guests will be incoming first year Flagler students and their families from the area. Join us as we give them a warm Flagler welcome! RSVP by 8/2/2010.
 
September 23
The First Coast Chapter will gather at Casa Marina in Jacksonville Beach for a networking happy hour. Free appetizers and cash bar will be available from 5:30-7:30pm.

Alumni Weekend was held April 29 through May 2 in St. Augustine. Nearly 500 alumni enjoyed a weekend filled with parties, surfing, golf, barbecue, and more! Be sure to mark your calendars: Alumni Weekend 2011 will be held April 28 through May 1.
 
Retracing History
Students explore World War II sites during a study abroad trip through Europe
The Normandy American Cemetery: "This location was probably the most heavy and emotional spots we have stopped, the countless number of marble crosses showing us the exact aftermath of World War II."

On June 4,  Flagler College history professors Dr. Michael Butler and Dr. Wayne Riggs landed in London with 41 Flagler students to begin a two-week journey through Europe as a continuation of two World War II history courses they are offering this summer.

One course looks at the war from the British perspective and the other focuses upon the American experience during the "Good War." 

The group crossed the English Channel from Portsmouth to Normandy, France, on June 6, the 66th anniversary of the D-Day invasion.

Alumni Spotlight:
"St. Augustine: Then & Now"
Alumna Summer Bozeman, a 2007 graduate of the communication program, turned her passion for history into a pictorial book on St. Augustine.

Bozeman did all the research for the book - searching archives and selecting photographs. Then she went out and recaptured the locations in her own photos.

New Vice President
Mark Whittaker
Flagler College has appointed Mark Whittaker to serve as vice president of institutional advancement.
 
Prior to accepting his appointment at Flagler, Whittaker held the position of vice president for college relations at Stetson University College of Law.
 

Whittaker has extensive experience in higher education fundraising, having served as a senior level development professional at Stetson University, Hollins University, Rhodes College and Sweet Briar College.
 

"It is a pleasure to be joining Dr. Abare and Flagler College at this important time in the development of the College," he said. "I look forward to meeting and working with the Flagler alumni and friends in expanding the impact the college is having on its students and higher education."
 
Whittaker will assume his new post July 19.
 
John W. Stewart III, Ph.D., former vice president of institutional advancement at Flagler, was recently appointed president of the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Ala.
