CITY TO HOST HISTORY OF SANDY SPRINGS LECTURE SERIES
Each Monday in October, the City will host a series of fascinating free lectures about Sandy Springs' past through a partnership with the Sandy Springs Historic Preservation Society. Presented by historian Clarke Otten, the History of Sandy Springs Lecture Series offers a unique opportunity to learn about Sandy Springs from a charismatic local expert. From prehistoric man hunting mastodons, through times of settlement and civil war, to our modern suburban community, Otten will take you on a captivating historical journey that will delight all who attend. "While our time as an incorporated city is under six years, the history of the Sandy Springs area is rich, and has had an impressive impact on who we are as a community today," said Sandy Springs Mayor Eva Galambos. "This series is a great way for residents, and those interested in the city's history, to learn more about our early beginnings." You can find out more about the History of Sandy Springs Lecture Series on the the Sandy Springs website.

FIRE SAFETY AND PREVENTION WEEK IS OCTOBER 9-15
Did you know that the City of Sandy Springs offers three free services to help its residents and businesses prepare for emergencies? CodeRED CodeRED is a weather warning system. When the National Weather Service issues a warning in your area, CodeRED will call your home or cell phone with a notification. When you sign up, you can choose the type of warnings you wish to receive. Of particular value is the ability to be woken up at night when tornado warnings are issued. Swift911 Swift911 is a service that allows the City to contact you by telephone in the event of an extreme emergency. Even though such events are unlikely, if a disaster were to occur, the City can call registered participants with critical, possibly life saving information. Smart911 Smart911 is a system used by our 911 dispatchers. Participants in Smart911 register critical information on a secure website, and City dispatchers can access that information. Residents and businesses can include medical information, emergency contact numbers, photos of their children and pets and any other information for Police, Fire and EMS services to have in the event of an emergency. You can find out more about CodeRED, Swift911 and Smart911 on the City's website.

SSPD TO PARTICIPATE IN DRUG TAKE BACK DAY
The Sandy Springs Police Department will participate in the Drug Enforcement Agency's (DEA), National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, October 29, 2011. If you have prescription drugs that you have not used, this is a great opportunity to dispose of them safely. You can drop off items from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at the Sandy Springs Police Department Headquarters.
The recreational use of prescription drugs by teens is a growing issue in America. Every day, approximately 2,500 teens get high for the first time using prescription drugs, often with dire consequences. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet.

RECENTLY PUBLISHED BOOK REVEALS THE STORIES OF SSPD POLICE OFFICERS
Developing relationships with the community is a governing principle of the Sandy Springs Police Department. But with nearly 100,000 residents, it would pose a challenge for every person in Sandy Springs to get to know the City's officers on a personal level. The department is hoping to change that with a recently published book titled, Signature Moments.
The book brings together a collection of 81 stories involving Sandy Springs Police Department employees. Each story signifies an officer's "signature moment," representing a rare opportunity to glimpse into the innermost thoughts of police officers as revealed through fascinating cases, intense events and intimate anecdotes.
Proceeds from the books will benefit the Sandy Springs Police Benevolent Fund, a non-profit organization that fosters and enhances the quality of life of members of the Sandy Springs Police Department, SSPD volunteers, Public Safety personnel, First Responders and their family members who are in need of financial support due to unforeseen circumstances or crisis.
You can find out more information about Signature Moments and purchase copies on the Police Department's website.

SHADE TO BE BUILT OVER CITY PARK PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT
Beginning on November 14, 2011, Morgan Falls Overlook Park will be closed to accommodate installation and construction of two shades. The shades will be installed over the large and small playground equipment in the park, and will have the ability to be taken down during poor weather and during the winter months.
"We have heard about how great the park is, but the one thing we heard over and over again was how hot the playground area was," said Recreation and Parks Director Ronnie Young. "We want to offer some respite during the hotter months of the year providing some shade while out at the playground."
The park is expected to be closed for three weeks while the shades are being installed.
