NATIONAL NIGHT OUT FOCUSES ON SAFETY IN OUR COMMUNITY
National Night Out

The City of Sandy Springs and Target have teamed up for the City's participation in the 28th Annual National Night Out (NNO) in an effort to create a safer and healthier community. National Night Out will be held on Tuesday, August 2, 2011, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Hammond Park, 6005 Hammond Drive. The free event will include food and refreshments; car safety seat checks; information on how to sign up for or start a Neighborhood Watch program; the Fire Safety House, which provides a hands-on learning environment; fire trucks and police cars; meeting police officers and firefighters; and information on how to be safe in an emergency.

"The goal of National Night Out is to create a safe and healthy community, so we involve residents and public safety personnel. We do this while also creating a unique crime and drug prevention event that takes place right in our neighborhood," said Police Chief Terry Sult. "The partnership between Target and the Sandy Springs Police Department further strengthens and supports local anticrime programs."

Nationwide, last year's event involved residents, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from more than 15,000 communities in all 50 states. In all, more than 37 million people participated in NNO. Target gives away 5 percent of its income to communities every week, which is more than $3 million per week. This year's local sponsors include Publix, FastSigns, Pig-n-Chick and Kroger.

CITY COUNCIL MEETING

INVESTING IN OUR INFRASTRUCTURE:

ROSWELL ROAD BRIDGE OVER I-285

Project Description
The project will include the construction of additional width on the northbound side of the existing bridge. This will allow for two, 11' wide, northbound and southbound travel lanes as well as a full, 11' wide, dedicated left turn lanes onto entrance ramps for I-285. Additional width to the westbound and eastbound on ramps for I-285 will be constructed to accommodate dual ramp meters and additional storage capacity. Short sections of concrete raised median are also proposed at both ends of the bridge to improve operational circulation.

Project Status
The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) conducted the preconstruction meeting with the contractor on July 26, 2011. Bridge construction will begin after the first of the year and utility relocation activities will be taking place in the interim. Progress of the utility relocates will determine the construction start date. The contractor has developed a value engineering proposal that is in the process of review by GDOT.

The progress schedule is being completed by the contractor for submittal to GDOT. The City of Sandy Springs requested a courtesy copy of the schedule so that milestone construction activities can be tracked. GDOT contract value of this project is $3.5 million.

JOHNSON FERRY/ABERNATHY ROAD

Project Description
The Johnson Ferry/Abernathy Road widening project is a joint effort between the City of Sandy Springs and the Georgia Department of Transportation.
The completed roads will have multiple lanes, a raised median, bike lanes and sidewalks.

Project Status
Construction began on one of the busiest east-west routes north of the Perimeter in 2008. The project is approximately 60 percent complete and is on schedule for a late 2012 completion date, weather permitting, according to GDOT. Work continues on the widening portion of Abernathy, with curbing scheduled to take place in early August. The major item of work presently scheduled is the superstructure of the new bridge. Concrete deck pours are taking place and the remaining sections of deck are projected to be complete the week of August 8, 2011, weather permitting. The next major traffic shift to the new bridge is projected to take place in late fall of 2011. After the traffic shift to the new bridge, refurbish work on the existing bridge will begin.

PEACHTREE DUNWOODY ROAD/SPALDING DRIVE

Project Description The project consists of the intersection improvement at Peachtree Dunwoody and Spalding Drive.

Project Status
Construction is still in progress with a projected completion of September 2011. Utility conflicts are being resolved so work can progress. Georgia Power has moved their facilities to new poles and other utilities are in the process of moving services to the shared poles. Once all utilities are relocated to the shared poles, conflicting poles will be scheduled for removal.

DUNWOODY PLACE IMPROVEMENTS

Project Description
The project consists of the widening of Dunwoody Place to accommodate the traffic volumes along this corridor including associated intersection improvements

Project Status
Due to delays experienced during the relocation of utilities, construction on the Dunwoody Place Widening project has not progressed as anticipated.  Georgia Power has completed the relocation of their facilities and other utilities will be following in order. Staff has arranged to have traffic signal wiring relocated so other utilities companies can expedite their own relocation work.  Once all utilities are on shared poles, conflict poles will be removed so paving can continue. Staff has been working in concert with the contractor and utility owners to help facilitate the process. At present, the expected completion date is September 2011.

HEROES OF SANDY SPRINGS EXHIBIT OPENS AT HERITAGE MUSEUM
Heritage Museum

Opening to the public on August 7, 2011 "Heroes of Sandy Springs," is a new exhibit in the Heritage Sandy Springs Museum that draws on historical photographs, archives, artifacts, and film clips to tell the story of policing and fire fighting in Sandy Springs. The exhibit actively engages visitors in learning about the long, but little known tradition of policing and fire fighting in Sandy Springs by examining the roots of policing and fire/rescue as the Sandy Springs community developed and grew in population and ethnic diversity.

Heroes of Sandy Springs will be located in the changing exhibit galleries of the Heritage Sandy Springs Museum. Each room will feature interpretive panels containing historic photographs and narratives and cases will display artifacts including badges, patches, equipment and other significant items. Visitors will be inspired by the stories of all volunteer groups that worked tirelessly to protect our community, and how the small volunteer forces became the world-class, professional departments that Sandy Springs has today.

The exhibit will be on display through February 15, 2012. For more information visit the Heritage Sandy Springs Museum Website.

2011 SANDY SPRINGS FESTIVAL
Civil War Camp

This year's Sandy Springs Festival will be held September 17-18 at Heritage Green and the surrounding streets. The event is a yearly fundraiser benefiting Heritage Sandy Springs, a non-profit organization serving the community.

Aside from the live entertainment, food, children's games and rides, and artist market, the 2011 Sandy Springs Festival will feature an interactive civil war encampment. In July 1864, more than 80,000 soldiers crossed the Chattahoochee and set up camp in the fields and farmlands of our community. Professional re-enactors from The Battle of Atlanta, Inc. will share their knowledge of camp life including cooking, music, marching and drilling. Festival visitors of all ages will be able to interact with soldiers and civilians, men and women, who will share their knowledge of what actually happened here in Sandy Springs.

Stop by the City's booth to meet our elected officials, firefighters and police officers. Staff will be on hand to answer your questions and share items related to your City.

For more information, visit the festival website.

The next Sandy Springs Charter Commission Meeting will take place on Tuesday, August 16. As with previous meetings, it will be open to the public. For more information, visit the Charter Commission webpage.
