SANDY SPRINGS FIRE RESCUE OPEN HOUSE
The Sandy Springs Fire Rescue Department is hosting an exciting event in our community. This years theme is, "Smoke Alarms, A Sound You Can Live With." The event will be held in celebration of Fire Safety Week
on Tuesday, October 5, 2010, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at all four of Sandy Springs
Fire Stations: Fire Station #1, 1425 Spalding Drive Fire Station #2, 135 Johnson Ferry Road Fire Station #3, 6025 Heards Road and Fire Station #4, 4697 Wieuca Road We urge you to invite all of your elementary and middle school aged students
and their siblings to this Open House to learn valuable fire safety lessons
from Sandy Springs finest firefighters. They will teach children fire safety
and prevention through enjoyable activities such as friendly firefighter and
fire house presentations. The goal is to have fun while educating at the same
time. Firefighters will cover topics such as EDITH (exit drills in the home),
the meeting place, stop/drop/roll and various other fire safety topics. The
Open House will also give the students a chance to interact with the
firefighters while experiencing a small part of the roles and responsibilities
of the firefighters. Station tours will also be available. Fire Prevention Week is actively supported by fire departments across the
country. For 85 years, fire departments have observed Fire Prevention Week as
part of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). This makes the week
the longest running public health and safety observance on record. We hope you
will become part of this tradition. For more information, or for answers to any questions, please contact Capt.
Mark Ware of the Sandy Springs Fire Rescue Department, at 770-730-5600 or by

NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH
With hurricane season kicking into high gear and tumultuous
storms across the nation or if fire strikes, it's time to make an emergency
plan. September is National Emergency Preparedness Month. Make sure you have a
family emergency plan. Your family may not be together when disaster strikes,
so it is important to plan in advance: how you will contact one another; how
you will get back together; and what you will do in different situations.
Family Emergency Plan: It may be easier to make a long-distance phone call than to call across town,
so an out-of-town contact may be in a better position to communicate among
separated family members. Be sure every member of your family knows the phone number and has coins or a
prepaid phone card to call the emergency contact. You may have trouble getting
through, or the telephone system may be down altogether, but be patient.
Emergency Information: Find out what kinds of disasters, both natural and man-made, are most likely to
occur in your area and how you will be notified. One common method is to
broadcast via emergency radio and TV broadcasts. In Sandy Springs you can sign
up to get a telephone call that alerts you when there is an emergency. To do
so, visit www.sandyspringsga.org and click on "Swift911."
Emergency Plans: You may also want to inquire about emergency plans at places where your family
spends time: work, daycare and school. If no plans exist, consider volunteering
to help create one. Talk to your neighbors about how you can work together in
the event of an emergency. Sandy Springs Fire Rescue offers Community Emergency
Response Team (CERT) training, which provides training on basic response skills
in times of disaster.
Visit www.ready.gov for more
information on how to prepare your home and business for emergencies. There are
resources for people with pets and for seniors and people with disabilities.

WORLD WATER DAY
The City of
Sandy Springs and the First Montessori School of Atlanta will again be
collaborating with each other by taking part in World Water Monitoring Day (WWMD)
activities at The John Ripley Forbes Big Trees Preserve.
"We are glad to
be partnering again with First Montessori, who is committed to sharing and protecting
our community's water ecosystem. Together, we are encouraging residents to
learn more about protecting our valuable water resources," said Mayor Eva
Galambos. "We are happy to have First Montessori's students see if there are
any changes from last year to this year-it's a great educational experience."
The groups will
join with thousands of volunteers across the globe to sample water quality and
report its findings. The monitoring activities are easy and engaging.
Volunteers will perform tests for dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity (clarity) and
temperature.
To accomplish
this important task, our environmental staff will be on hand to help test the
waters and to serve as guides for others who may want to join this effort. World
Water Monitoring Day is officially celebrated on September 18th;
however, the monitoring window was extended from March 22nd (World
Water Day) until December
31, 2009.
The
coordinators of WWMD hope to expand participation to one million people in 100
countries by 2012. It's easy-all you have to do is: Register your location;
prepare your monitoring equipment; monitor your location; and report your data.
If you or your
organization would like to participate in local events, please contact David
Chastant, the City's Manager of Stormwater Services at 770-730-5600.
For more details,
visit the World Water Monitoring Day web site at www.WorldWaterMonitoringDay.org
