SANDY SPRINGS TO ASSESS FLOODPLAIN, REDRAW MAPS
In the United States and in Georgia, flooding is the number one natural disaster. To identify flood hazards and the risks they pose, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) develops flood hazard maps, officially known as Flood Insurance Rate Maps or FIRMS.

FEMA is now working with the State and the City of Sandy Springs to update or revise the FIRMS from Buford Dam to Coweta County, which includes the City of Sandy Springs. This will produce a better assessment of the Chattahoochee River Basin's current flood risk and will allow officials to develop a more comprehensive approach to mitigate damage brought on by flooding.

The new flood maps are targeted to become effective in the fall of 2011. Prior to that, residents are urged to attend regular meetings, voice their opinions during the review and comment period and investigate flood insurance requirements. Some property owners with mortgages may face new flood insurance requirements while others may find the requirements have been lifted. Flood insurance is a federally underwritten program that can help property owners repair or replace their structures and belongings after a flood.

How can I help reduce pollutants and erosion? A Rain Garden - That's How!

Stormwater and YouThe purpose of a rain garden is to capture excess rainwater, allowing it to percolate down into the ground. In the process, impurities are filtered out by the soil and plants that can tolerate both wet and dry conditions. The alternative is for rainwater to flow across lawns and down streets into stormwater drains (picking up pollutants along the way) causing erosion and flooding.

SANDY SPRINGS FIRE RESCUE URGES VIGILANCE AROUND WATER THIS SUMMER
Sandy Springs Fire DepartmentToo often, firefighters hear people say, "It was just a few seconds." Unfortunately, just a few seconds is all it takes for a child to drown. Drowning is a leading cause of death in children under the age of five. Sandy Springs Fire Rescue is urging vigilance this summer as people take to the water.

Most of these children drown in their own backyard swimming pool, but others drown in buckets, bathtubs, toilets, dog water bowls, rivers and streams. Small children are top-heavy, and they don't have the upper body strength to lift themselves out of one of these dangerous situations. Even if the child survives the incident, they are often left with permanent brain damage.

K-9 SEVEN EARNS TRACKING CERTIFICATION
SevenSandy Springs Police Department's K-9, named Seven, recently earned a tracking certification from The National Narcotic Detector Dog Association (NNDDA). The NNDDA is a professional, nonprofit organization dedicated to the utilization and proficiency of scent detector dogs for the benefit of Law Enforcement and Private Industry. Seven's primary goal for SSPD is tracking.

Seven completed his certification in Barnesville, Ga. The test is designed to examine the proficiency of the canine to follow a track and locate a suspect. Here's how the test works: Officials try to set it up in a location similar to a working environment. The track is in an area out of view of the handler and is laid in a fashion that is consistent with the path of a fleeing suspect. The suspect is a person unknown to the dog if possible. The track is at least thirty minutes old and will have one cross track. It should have at least three surface changes and a minimum of two turns and will be at least 800 yards but not more than 1,000 yards. To successfully complete the tracking phase, the canine must locate the suspect to the satisfaction of the certifying official.

SAFETY TIPS FROM THE SANDY SPRINGS POLICE DEPARTMENT
Sandy Springs Police DepartmentProtect yourself from "phishing" scams online. Phishing usually involves criminals posing as legitimate institutions in order steal your personal information.
  1. Never provide your information in response to an unsolicited request, whether it is over the phone or over the Internet. E-mails and Internet pages created by phishers may look exactly like the real thing. If you did not initiate the communication, you should not provide any information.
  2. If you believe the contact may be legitimate, contact the financial institution yourself. You can find phone numbers and Web sites on the monthly statements you receive from your financial institution, or you can look the company up in a phone book or on the Internet. The key is that you should be the one to initiate the contact, using contact information that you have verified yourself.
  3. Never provide your password over the phone or in response to an unsolicited Internet request. A financial institution would never ask you to verify your account information online. Thieves armed with this information and your account number can help themselves to your savings.
  4. Review account statements regularly to ensure all charges are correct. If your account statement is late in arriving, call your financial institution to find out why. If your financial institution offers electronic account access, periodically review activity online to catch suspicious activity.
