911 FEE SURVEYIn
September 2009, the City of Sandy Springs launched its new 911 center,
the Chattahoochee River 911 Authority. The State of Georgia gives
jurisdictions the ability to assess up to a $1.50 fee per phone line
(landline, mobile and VoiP) per month to assist with the funding of
location-based technology to ensure that emergency responders are
dispatched to the correct location. Prior to September 1, 2009, these
fees were remitted to Fulton County, since they provided the 911 call
answering and emergency dispatching services. Now that your City has opened 911 operations, we are entitled to
receive the 911 fees you already pay to help support its operation.
While the majority of the fees from Sandy Springs phone lines were
redirected to the City, we are aware of several that have not. We are
asking that you check your telephone bill (October 2009 or later) to
ensure that the fee is being sent to Sandy Springs and complete one of
the following brief surveys to provide us with the requested
information. 911 Fee Survey for Residents

ROSWELL ROAD BRIDGE WIDENING
The City hosted a
Public Information Open House (PIOH) on Tuesday, January 26th from
5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to discuss the proposed widening project of the
Roswell Road (State Route 9) bridge over Interstate 285. The project
will include the construction of additional width on the northbound side of the
existing bridge. This will allow for two, 11' wide, northbound and southbound
travel lanes as well as full, 11' wide, dedicated left turn lanes onto the entrance
ramps for I-285. Additional width to the westbound and eastbound on ramps
for I-285 will be constructed to accommodate dual ramp meters and additional
storage capacity. Short sections of concrete raised median are also proposed
at both ends of the bridge to improve operational circulation. The
project concept report and layout can be found on the project's CIP Web page.

2010 CENSUS INFORMATION
To achieve an accurate assessment
of the number and location of the people living within the nation's borders,
the U.S. Constitution mandates a census of the population every 10 years.
The Census population totals
determine which states gain or lose representation in Congress. It also
determines the amount of state and federal funding communities receive throughout
the decade. 2010 Census data will directly affect how more than $4
trillion is allocated to local, state and tribal governments. For this funding
allocation to be accomplished, the goal is to count
everybody, count them only once and count them in the right place.
The 2010 Census will take place on April 1, 2010. To help
ensure the nation's diverse population can answer the questionnaire, about 13
million bilingual Spanish/English forms will be available. Additionally,
questionnaires in Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and Russian will be
available on request.
With
one of the shortest questionnaires in history, the 2010 Census asks for name,
gender, age, race, ethnicity, relationship and whether you own or rent your
home. It takes less than 10 minutes for the average household to complete. All
responses are used for statistical purposes only and all are strictly
confidential.
For
more information, visit the 2010 Census Web site and www.census.gov.

WATERING TIPS FORM THE SANDY SPRING STORMWATER DEPARTMENT
Because of the recent record rains and saturated soil, it is advised that you adjust your watering routine.
Adjust
sprinklers so only your lawn is watered and not the house, sidewalk or
street.
Choose
shrubs and groundcovers instead of turf for hard-to-water areas such as
steep slopes and isolated strips.
Plant
in the fall when conditions are cooler and rainfall is more plentiful.
Water
your lawn and garden in the morning or evening when temperatures are
cooler to minimize evaporation.
Spreading
a layer of organic mulch around plants retains moisture and saves water,
time and money. -
If
water runs off your lawn easily, split your watering time into shorter
periods to allow for better absorption. -
Check
the root zone of your lawn or garden for moisture before watering using a
spade or trowel. If it's still moist two inches under the soil surface, you
still have enough water. -
Adjust
your lawn mower to a higher setting. A taller lawn shades roots and holds
soil moisture better than if it is closely clipped. -
Use
sprinklers for large areas of grass. Water small patches by hand to avoid
waste. Collect
water from your roof to water your garden.
For more tips on water conservation visit the City of Sandy Springs Water Conservation or Stormwater pages.

SAFETY TIPS FORM THE SANDY SPRINGS POLICE DEPARTMENT
Benefits of Home Security Systems
Most would say that the biggest
benefit of having a home security alarm is the peace-of-mind that comes with
it. When something goes wrong (whether you are home or thousands of miles away
on vacation), knowing that a system is already in place and that your house has
a direct link to the proper authorities is very reassuring. There may be immediate monetary
benefits as well. Having a security system that is connected to a monitoring
service can, in some situations, lower homeowner's insurance payments up to
20 percent. Many monitoring services also offer plans that include monitoring your home for
fire, which some insurance companies will also take into account when calculating
your premium. In most every case, it will decrease the likelihood of losing money
due to burglary. |
