SANDY SPRINGS BECOMES NEW HOST TO
ANNE FRANK IN THE WORLD: 1929-1945 EXHIBIT
The City of Sandy Springs is delighted to announce it will host the Anne Frank in the World: 1929-1945 exhibit for a minimum of three years commencing December 2009. It will be located in the Parkside Shops Shopping Center at 5920 Roswell Road, Suite A-209. The exhibit will open in January 2010.

Anne Frank"We are thrilled to have the exhibit move to the City," said Mayor Eva Galambos. "This exhibit serves as a powerful reminder to our residents and visitors of the Holocaust's history and the endurance of Anne Frank's story. It also shows what we need to do each and every day to triumph over bigotry, hatred and prejudice in today's society. This is one of only three such displays in the world-we are so proud to showcase it in Sandy Springs."

The City is required to raise $50,000 to offset startup and operational expenses. "I believe this exhibit will be an endowment for the future. But we can't do it alone, we need the support of our residents and business owners," added the Mayor.

If you would like to contribute to the Anne Frank Fund, please make your checks payable to the Friends of Sandy Springs-Anne Frank Park, 7840 Roswell Road, Building 500, Sandy Springs, GA  30350, attn: Gary Alexander, Chair of Fundraising. If you have questions, please feel free to e-mail Gary Alexander at garypalexander@bellsouth.net or City Councilmember Dianne Fries at dianne.fries@sandyspringsga.org.

RETIREMENT SERVICE FOR K-9 POLICE OFFICER
The City of Sandy Springs held a special ceremony to retire K-9 officer "Amos" on August 18th. The drug and patrol dog is retiring for health reasons. Also at the meeting, the Police Department welcomed their newest addition, K-9 officer, "Seven."

Amos has a much heralded career of patrolling and taking drugs of the street. In his three-year career, he and handler K-9 Officer Michael DeWald have taken $3.7 million worth of cocaine, methamphetamines, marijuana and heroin; 50 handguns; multiple vehicles; and $300,000 in bulk US currency off the streets.

As the first Sandy Springs K-9 Officer, Amos has also had many notable arrests: He tracked and located property belonging to a Councilmember and found the suspect who broke into her home; he apprehended an armed robbery and aggravated assault suspect after a shoot out on GA 400; and he sniffed out a hidden compartment in a car that led to Cobb County's largest methamphetamine Super Lab arrests.

SANDY SPRINGS FIRE RESCUE HOLDS

DYSTROPHY ASSOCIATION
The City of Sandy Springs is proud to partner with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) to raise much needed funds to combat this disease and those associated with it. Held from 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Friday, September 4 through Sunday, September 6, 2009, you'll find firefighters located at:
  • Kroger Supermarket, 227 Sandy Springs Place
  • Kroger Supermarket, 4920 Roswell Road
  • Kroger Supermarket, 8331 Roswell Road
"I am extremely proud of our firefighters, who, at a moment's notice, risk their lives subduing fires and saving residents from emergencies," said Sandy Springs Mayor Eva Galambos.
"Georgia and national firefighters have been collecting monies for MDA for more than 50 years," said Sandy Springs Fire Chief Jack McElfish. "They have also worked with MDA to eradicate the muscular dystrophies, Lou Gehrig's disease, myasthenia gravis and other neuromuscular diseases."

The Mayor added she is proud of these firefighters for carrying on this noble tradition. "I hope this is a huge success in our City. SANDY SPRINGS AND FIRST MONTESSORI TEAM UP TO MONITOR CITY'S WATER
The City of Sandy Springs and the First Montessori School of Atlanta will be collaborating with each other by taking part in World Water Monitoring Day (WWMD) activities on September 18, 2009, at The John Ripley Forbes Big Trees Preserve.

"The City and First Montessori are committed to sharing and protecting our community's water ecosystem and they encourage residents to learn more about protecting our valuable water resources," said Mayor Eva Galambos. "World Water Monitoring Day is an excellent initiative designed to promote education and personal stewardship. We are happy to have First Montessori's students take part in the learning exercise."

The groups will join with thousands of volunteers across the globe to sample water quality and report its findings. The monitoring activities are easy and engaging. Volunteers will perform tests for dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity (clarity) and temperature.

To accomplish this important task, our environmental staff will be on hand to help test the waters and to serve as guides for others who may want to join this effort. World Water Monitoring Day is officially celebrated on September 18th; however, the monitoring window was extended for the first time in 2009 from this past March 22nd (World Water Day) until December 31, 2009.

The coordinators of WWMD hope to expand participation to one million people in 100 countries by 2012. It's easy-all you have to do is: Register your location; prepare your monitoring equipment; monitor your location; and report your data.

If you or your organization would like to participate in local events, please contact David Chastant, the City's Manager of Stormwater Services at 770-730-5600.

SAFETY MESSAGE FROM THE
SANDY SPRINGS POLICE DEPARTMENT
Exercise is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Here are several tips to keep you safe while walking and running along the streets of Sandy Springs.
  1. Always walk or run facing traffic.
  2. Remember that the heavier traffic is the harder it is for motorists to see pedestrians.
  3. During pre-dawn and dusk hours, it is very hard to see pedestrian movement on the roadway-wear a reflective vest.
  4. While crossing at traffic signals, wait for the "walk" signal and be sure to press the pedestrian crossing button if it is available.
  5. Crossing between intersections with traffic lights and where crosswalks are provided is prohibited by law. (40-6-92 GA Code)
  6. Never assume drivers can see you.  Even at the crosswalk when you have the green light, make sure the vehicle traffic stops before you enter onto the roadway.
dogDOG PARK IS NOW OPEN
Treat man's best friend to a trip to the newly opened City of Sandy Springs dog park. The park is located on the river at the end of Morgan Falls Road.
