SANDY SPRINGS NAMES NEW POLICE CHIEF
Terry L. Sult is the new police chief for the City of Sandy Springs. Currently the chief of Gastonia, NC, he will begin work with the Sandy Springs Police Department on October 27. "I am confident that Terry Sult will lead us effectively and collaboratively. He is an innovative chief with unquestionable integrity. His leadership will be a great asset for Sandy Springs," said City Manager John McDonough. "I chose Chief Sult not only for his successes but also based on impeccable references."
A career law enforcement officer, Sult has a long history of collaboration and building multi-jurisdictional relationships. He has worked closely with both business and in diverse communities.
More than 30 years of his policing career was devoted to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Sult believes that the Sandy Springs approach to local government is consistent with the philosophy of management preferable in effective policing. "The focus of the police department must be preventing crime, solving-problems and enforcing laws," he said. "Sandy Springs appears to embrace this philosophy on a city-wide basis."

GREENPRINT SANDY SPRINGS UPDATE
Greenprint Sandy Springs is a partnership between the City of Sandy Springs and The Trust for Public Land (TPL) funded by the City, the Friends of Sandy Springs, a donation from the UPS Foundation to the Sandy Springs Conservancy and an anonymous donor to TPL. Since the first stakeholder meeting in May, the Greenprint Sandy Springs project team has been working to build a GIS-based model that will be used to create a long-term conservation and green space vision for the city. At the October workshop, stakeholders will weigh goals and criteria within each goal and review and refine the prioritization maps. This information will help set the stage and will guide the rest of the Greenprint Sandy Springs mapping and action planning.

PAVING UPDATES
The 2009 Capital Paving continues with work on Jett Ferry Road from Dunwoody Club Drive to Butler Road, Spalding Drive from Jett Ferry Road to Wickley Way, Mt. Vernon Road from Dunwoody Club Drive to Spalding Drive and Nesbit Ferry Road from Spalding Drive to Meadowgate Drive. These streets will complete Phase I of the 2009 Capital Paving. In order to expedite the work on these heavily traveled roads, the work will be completed during night hours. This allows the work to be completed in 1/3 the time it would take during daytime hours and gives the City of Sandy Springs a superior, longer lasting road for the money spent. Work also will continue on the 2008 LARP Project on Duncourtney Drive, Chaparral Drive, Riverhall Court and Central Park West. Motorist can expect minor delays during working hours. Please keep an eye on the City's Web site for updates and contractor schedules. |

SIDEWALK PROGRAM UPDATE
Since the first Sidewalk Program construction contract was awarded in March 2008, more than 12,000 feet of sidewalks have been installed in the area of Sandy Springs Middle School and Dunwoody Springs Charter Elementary School. Sites in the area of Woodland Charter Elementary School and Riverwood High School are scheduled for construction in the upcoming month.
River Valley Road Sidewalk Project City Council has awarded this project to Ginarc Construction based upon bids received from nine contractors and submitted a formal Construction Agreement to the Georgia Department of Transportation to secure matching federal/state funding. Construction is planned to begin later this fall and take approximately six months to complete. This project will install sidewalks on both sides of River Valley Road from Riverside Drive to Amberidge Trail, a distance of approximately one mile.
Lake Forest Elementary School Sidewalk Project A design consultant is on board and surveys are underway in the effort to design and construct a sidewalk on Lake Forrest Drive adjacent to the new elementary school. Improvements to the intersection of Lake Forrest Drive and Hammond Drive are included in this project. The construction project will be bid in early 2009.
