Greetings!
We certainly hope you had a wonderful holiday season and that you are as excited about the prospects in 2009 as we are. Even though we didn't publish this newsletter in December we had a very exciting and busy month getting ready for the start of the new year. We used our time updating the Kitty Kabinet information on the website and tried to put it into a format you will find easy to use when ordering with added components. Time will tell if it is actually working the way we hope it will, or if it needs more work. If you have any comments we would love to hear from you. We also added our new Wall Mount product to the website. This is the half tree unit that you can mount right on the wall to save space while still giving your cat all the features and benefits of a whole cat tree. Look for a line of accessories to be forthcoming. During 2009 we hope to participate in more CFA and TICA cat shows a greater distance from our home base in Grand Rapids, MI. Our participation schedule for the first quarter of the year is printed i the side-bar on the left. We hope to have the opportunity to meet more of you face-to-face at one of these shows. It's also a good thing to keep in mind that if you are interested in buying a piece of cat furniture and we can bring it to a show near you - you will save shipping cost. Finally, I just want to mention the "Breeder Referral Program" is going gang-busters. This is a program we started late last year where we provide both the breeder and their customer an incentive to buy a Great Lakes Cat Tree. The program information is still only available through direct contact at a cat show or by sending an inquiring email. Putting this program on the website is still on my to-do list. Remember .... As always, we are open to suggestions and encourage you to email us with any ideas or comments about our products or the content of this newsletter. We appreciate your support. Enjoy!

Kitty Kabinets All wood furniture designed to hide the litter box The Kitty Kabinet is a beautiful piece of cat furniture for your home designed to also hide a litter box. The nearly airtight construction, due to our unique flapper door, not only hides the unsightly mess and stops the tracking of litter, it also traps any unpleasant odor. The bottom of the Kabinet is lined with extremely durable plastic laminate to allow for easy clean up of tracked litter or accidental accidents outside the litter box.
The Kabinet comes in two styles: Traditional or Shaker. The Traditional style features a more universal look as evidenced by the small crown molding around the top, and the base molding around the bottom where the Kabinet meets the floor. The raised panel doors use heavy duty, concealed European style hinges for long life and smooth self closing action.
The Shaker style Kabinet features nice clean lines as denoted by the chamfered (grooved) edge on the top and the tapered legs on the base. This unit has flat panel doors and uses the same type of hinges used on the Traditional Kabinet.
Apartment and condominium dwellers find the Kitty Kabinet even more valuable. Often it is difficult to find a convenient spot for a litter box in a smaller home with no basement or utility room. They wind up in bedrooms, dens, etc. With a Kitty Kabinet, the litter box can hide in plain sight right in your living area.
Each style of Kabinet has three optional modules you can add to configure your Kitty Kabinet to fit your need. First, there is a drawer unit that provides a place to hide scoops, bags, treats, etc. Then there is a component shelf unit for additional storage or to turn your Kabinet into a TV stand. And finally, there is the "Cubby" that provides additional closed storage for larger items such as your supply of box liners or bag of kitty litter.
Check out the many options available on our website, where you will also find pictures of the various component pieces and see how they look in different composite designs.
| New Year's Resolutions for cat owners No - it's not too late to start
The Kansas State Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital has suggested 10 New Year's resolutions to consider for the well being of your cat.
1. Make sure your cat sees a veterinarian at least once a year for an annual exam. This includes keeping its vaccine status up to date and checking for dental health, lumps and bumps, heart murmurs and other things an owner may not notice at home.
2. Be consistent with at-home health care for your cat, and give prescribed medication as directed. Keep your pet on year-around, monthly heart worm prevention. Regularly use flea/tick prevention, even if you have an indoor pet.
3. Get some sort of pet identification, whether it be a tag or a microchip. Photos are also a good way to help identify you pet if it should become lost. You never know when your cat may "hear the call of the wild" and dart through an open door.
4. Pay attention to your cat. They get bored and may become destructive without attention. Teach your cat a new, fun, interactive game like fetch; it keeps them motivated. Learn your cats' messages - be aware of certain sounds and mannerisms. This is a good way to bond with your pet, and it may give you insight as to how your cat is feeling that will become more helpful as your cat ages.
5. Pat attention to your cat's hygiene. Trim the fat! Exercise and limit treats. Groom your cat regularly - it's interactive and it's good to get the dead hair out of the coat before it becomes a hairball. You may also discover lumps and bumps that should not be there. Brush you cat's teeth and/or have a professional take care of the dental hygiene. Learn to clip you cat's nails. Long nails can be uncomfortable and sometimes grow into footpads or break, which is very painful. Scoop your cat's litter box daily. Do an entire litter box change once a week.
6 Spay or neuter your cat. Not only does it decrease the cat population, but it also has a lot of health benefits for your cat. The benefits for females include, a decrease in mammary cancer, uterine infection, uterine cancer and ovarian cancer, and for males, a decrease in prostate problems, testicular cancer, roaming, urine marking and inter-male fighting.
7. If your cat wears a collar check it often. Make sure it fits properly - you should be able to slide two fingers underneath the collar.
8. Pet proof your house. Keep poisons in locked cabinets, keep poisonous plants and electrical cords out of reach and don't leave out strings or ribbons for a cat to swallow.
9. Learn a fun fact about your cat's species and breed. This is a fun thing to do before buying a new cat, but it is also fun to keep building the knowledge base about your particular cat.
10. Support your local shelter through the donation of time, talent and/or money. We all know they take in stray animals that often turn out to be lost pets. One day, it could be your cat they reunite with its owner. |

The Right Cat Tree For Your Persian
The Persian - Is the Most Popular Breed of Cat
The Persian has always been a very valued commodity. The breed is thought to have originated in the Turkey/Persia (Iran) part of the world, and was once traded for goods and sought after for its beauty and temperament. In the early 1500's the breed spread throughout Europe and eventually made its way the Picture - courtesy of: the U.S. where it became one of the first Rhamjoge Persian Cattery cats' registered with CFA when that association began in 1909. Today, the Persian is accepted in all associations.
The most distinguishing feature of a Persian is the shape of its head and face. It has a wide round head with large expressive eyes, chubby cheeks, a high nose, and low rounded ears. These features give the face a flat smashed look, and for many owners this look is one of the many reasons the cat breed is so attractive.
The Persians' body is strong and boxy looking, with short muscular legs and soft long hair. This body style usually keeps them from high jumping and climbing as they like to keep their feet firmly planted. They also like to drape themselves on a favorite window sill or a chair. For these reasons you want to find a cat tree that is solidly built; provides climbing levels that are relatively close together; and gives the cat an area they can call their own and where they will feel secure.
The Black-Eyed-Susan and the Sunflower are two medium sized cat trees each with a large circular base for stability that fit the needs of the Persian. Both weigh one hundred pounds or more which provides the firm feeling the cat loves so much. Each style of cat tree provides three climbing levels that are spaced comfortably apart for the short legged breed. The leaves are contoured and lined with a thermal liner to retain the cats' body heat for added comfort and feeling of security. The tops of these trees are perfect for the cat that loves to drape themselves over a chair or the back of the couch, because the petals of the flower droop down toward the floor. The flower center is also layered with our heat retention padding. The leaves on both trees are mounted on the side or front of the trunk, which allows you to place the tree closer to a wall or window, and will allow the tree to slide deeper into a corner.
For more information about either cat tree simply click on the tree name above and it will take you to the product page on our website.
