Greetings!

Its Official ... Spring is here, and boy am I glad because I'm sick and tired of the sedentary lifestyle of winter.  I know, it's my own fault.  Every year as I get older winter activity seems to deminish, and spring brings the challenge of losing the extra pounds I found over the winter months.  As I get older it gets harder to lose those few pounds and to get back to the activity level of past years.

Our cats are very much the same way.  They go through an aging process similiar to us and as they get older they face new health challenges and settle in to a more sedentary lifestyle.  Its our responsiblitly as owners to constantly be on the look out for those subtle changes in behavior that could be the tell-tale that something negative is going on.

This month we focus on health and care for the older cat.  We talk about you and your veterinarian working as a team to provide optimal care and nutrition.  We found some websites with tons of good information that are worth your visit.  And we provide you some interesting URL's that you can click on under "Cat Links" that we hope you will find informative and helpful.

As always, we are open to suggestions and encourage you to email us with any ideas or comments about our products or the content of this newsletter.  Enjoy!

The Sunflower
Beauty of the outdoors

The Beautiful Sunflower The Sunflower is a very attractive piece of cat furniture and brings the beauty of the outdoors into your home.  This medium sized cat tree stands only 4 feet 4 inches high and is designed to fit against a wall or in a corner.  The leaves are offset which allows your cat to quickly climb or descend the tree enhancing the exercise value of the cat's activity.  The leaves are attached to the trunk in a manner that provides a "flex" when your cat jumps onto the leaf making it easier on the cat's joints and back.  Older cats will get more use out of this tree because of this feature.  The top flower on the tree is 28 inches round and is constructed with a padded center and a thermal liner that retains your cat's body heat for added comfort. A large round base adds stability and gaurantees the cat tree will not tip during normal use.  There are a total of four holes, with one set being a "pass through", to tweak your cat's curiosity and provide hiding places.   Many people find the bottom hole the perfect storage area for toys.  This unique piece of cat furniture will be the center of conversation among your friends and the focalpoint of activity for your cat.  For more detail see: The Sunflower
A Healthy Cat
Tips for Health and Care of Older Cats

VeterinarianMaintaining your cats good health is an important factor in increasing its longevity and quality of life.

The aging process in cats is a very natural thing and as a responsible owner you need to be aware of subtle changes in your cats' behavior that are tell-tale signs that your cats' health is being challenged.

A healthy cat today can live to 18 plus years.  But inorder to become a "senior cat" with good quality of life it needs your help and that of your veterinarian to minimize the negative impact that the aging process brings.  Early detection of a problem and bringing it to the attention of your veterinarian is the best assurance that your cats' senior years will be productive and enjoyable.

We have published a Hubpage that contains information about what you should be asking your veterinarian to make sure you are working together as a team, and we list some of the signs to look for that are early indicators of a possible health problem.  To read the entire text simply click on this link:  senior cat health

Rags2Riches Ragdolls

Ragdoll
The Ragdoll cat has a gently disposition and the ability to relax its body like a child's ragdoll, hence the name "Ragdoll".  This gentle cat is very docile, yet it is also a very active cat that absolutely loves to play.  It easily learns to fetch and loves the "wand" like toys that require you to play with the cat.  To relax, they love to stretch out on their backs, legs spread wide apart, and take a little nap.  If you like a little shadow following you all around the house, then a Ragdoll is certainly the cat for you.  The Ragdoll generally loves being with people and gets along quite well with other animals and children, providing they are not too aggressive toward the Ragdoll.

The traditional Ragdoll is a pointed cat with blue eyes.  They are born white, getting their point colors gradually in the first few weeks and then obtaining full color at about two years of age.  Full maturity of size takes 3-4 years.  Ragdolls are a large domestic cat with males usually weighing 14-18 pounds (sometimes 20) and the females 8-14 pounds.

Cody's Corner
Tips for your cats' wellbeing

CodyGarfield, the 25 plus pound fictional character of the comic strip, can getaway with epitomizing the lazy, self-serving, over-weight, non-exercising life style of the "fat cat".  In reality, the "fat cat" is not generally a healthy cat.  It is estimated that 40 percent of today's cats are overweight, and the main cause is simply overeating - which is the result of either overfeeding or feeding the wrong types of food.  Excess weight is associated with many of the health problems treated by veterinarians today.  If you know, or maybe just suspect, your cat is overweight there are a number of websites that will help you determine the optimal weight for your cat and provide suggested food guidelines to help keep your cat healthy.  A few of my favorites are:
Best choices for a healthy cat
What to feed your cat?
Overweight cats are not healthy cats

Cody's final thought:
When hungry, meow loudly so they feed you just to shut you up.
