Fall 2011

Vol 4, Issue 4

Bent Creek Lodge at Night FallBCL Header

Jodee and I would like to thank all of you for making this an outstanding summer for Bent Creek Lodge.  The majority of our guests have been the many of you that have returned for another visit or the friends and family you have referred to us.  We have enjoyed all the visits but one of the most interesting visits this summer has been the amazing number of humming

birds.  Where we once were happy to have three or four of the greedy little dive bombers fighting over the feeder, this year we have had dozens. They have  kept every-one on the deck entertained with their constant aerial acrobatics for the last two months.  They drain the feeder in just a little over a day.  We discovered they would even come to feed while we held the feeder.  Check out the video we made of them by clicking on the picture.  Its best to see it at full screen with the sound on high.  (there is no music or talking, just them chirping)  They are all Ruby Throated Humming Birds.  That is the only species east of the Mississippi according to our birding book.  Those without the "ruby throats" are females and adolescents.  The guests have spent hours photographing them.  Peter Schreck sent me two that are fabulous and are included in the video.

Summer is winding down.  I am sure the hummers will be headed to Mexico soon.  Last week several of the guests were delivering their kids to college.  The Leaf season will be here soon.  Our October weekends are full except for a couple of one night opening the first weekend.  But there are rooms available during the week and during the first couple of weeks in November when the leaves are often just as colorful. Until then things are a little slower here so we would like to encourage you to visit.  Ask for the FALL NEWS LETTER SPECIAL and get 10% off any new reservations for stays from now to September 29th. Hope to see you soon.

New Photo Contest

It's time for another photo contest.  We are in the process of tweaking our webpage for Bent Creek Lodge and one of our primary objectives is to  update the activities page.  So we need good pictures of people enjoying the many things to do in our area.   I would love it if they were all pictures of people who have stayed at the lodge. Therefore the rules for this contest are:

  • The picture must include a person involved in one of the many activities available in the area from street dining to white water rafting
  • The person must have stayed at Bent Creek Lodge and must be identified with the entry
  • No more than two entries per person
  • The picture must be in digital format, preferably sent to us by email
  • All entries must be received by October 25th.
  • By entering the contest you agree that Bent Creek Lodge may use the photos in any marketing material for the Lodge

The photos below are examples of the types of pictures that would qualify provided that you also sent int the last name of the subjects.  The first place winner will receive a Gift Certificate for a two night stay and Bent Creek Lodge.  Second and third place will receive a GC for a one night stay.  Any of the other entries that are used on the website will receive a GC to the lodge for $75.  We have seen some fantastic photos from you in the past and look forward to the entries again.

Gertrude wouldn't quite qualify.  She is Jodee's latest addition to our Yard Art collection. Jodee found her at the annual Biltmore Village Arts and Crafts sale for a price even I could live with.  A picture of Jodee and Marcia shopping there would have worked.

Sincerly,
