Greetings!

Skinny Dip Falls
Skinny Dip Falls
We hope you found some escape from this record  hot summer.  It has been an awfully warm one here as well.  Our one saving grace is that it is still not as hot as most places.  Our 90 degree weather felt better than the 100 plus that some folks were getting down the mountain.   Another good thing is we can get away from the heat by going higher up.  Twice this summer, Jodee and I rounded up Loe-D and Leona and headed up to Skinny Dip Falls to cool off.  Skinny Dip is  on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Grave Yard Fields at about 5000 ft.  By the time we got there, both times, the temperature had dropped to the low 70's and we no longer felt the need to "dip" into those icy waters.  The guy behind the rock is showing a lot of skin but he is neither Skinny nor Dipping. The place is way too popular for "a la naturel"  bathing most of the time.

Summer is winding down, kids are heading back to school and it will be fall before you know it.  To finish out the final hot August nights ask for our Back to School Special, and take 10% off any new reservations for stays from now to August 31st.  If you are waiting to come for the fall colors realize that lots of people are planning early.  Here is our availability for the leaf season weekends; Oct. 1,2 - none, Oct. 8,9 - the Outer Banks Room only, Oct. 15, 16 - the W.F., Mt. and Cher. Rooms, Oct. 22,23 and 29,30 - the Outer Banks Room only, Nov. 5,6 - everything is open (the color is usually still very good).  We hope this might help your plans.  Stay cool and we hope to see you soon.

NAVITAT Canopy Tours - Exciting New Adventure Activity

Navitat zip liner
Zip liner
Last week we had three couples return from their day at Navitat raving about their experience.  Some of them were "outdoorsy adventure" types, but as they put it, some were not.   They all said it was a super thrill.  I had seen the billboards and thought that I would get around to going but now I can't wait.  I just watched the videos on their website and they are awesome.  They refer to it as "Exhilaration meets Contemplation".  There are 10 different zip lines totaling over a mile of suspended cable.  You actually fly over this entire cove that is about 20 miles north of Asheville.  There are also two  "sky bridges" and two rappeling platforms.  It is about a 3-1/2 hour tour and besides the thrill they also promise you will learn about the enviroment and yourself.  The cost is $85 for adults and $75 for those under 18.  There also have some discounts on their website like 20% off for locals on Tuesdays.  For each tour there are 8 guests maximum accompanied by 2 professionally trained Canopy Guides.  Our guests said that it was quite busy when they were there.  If you are looking for a new thrill I think this might be the one for you.  To find our more about the Navitat Canopy tours click here.

Photo Contest Winners

We would like to thank all of you that sent in photos for the Bent Creek Lodge photo contest.  We loved them all!  In fact, I had a hard time picking the best shot of the 5 or 6 pictures that some folks sent.  So of course I had to bring in Jodee to help with selecting the over all winners.  Our header at the top of the page features the first place photo by Karen Peron.  We'll be sending her a $185 Gift Certificate.  I know that shooting the front of the Lodge is difficult.  A couple of professional photographers we hired were able to get only lifeless shots  while Karen managed to capture a beautiful warm glow as night fell on the front porch.  We chose Vicki Davidson's picture  of the lower deck in the morning fog for second place.   It seemed to express very well the serenity of that space.  Tracy Stoddard's picture of the garden gate with the fall colors behind it was selected for third place.  The silhouette of the gate and tree trunks was an interesting contrast to the orange and yellows beyond.   We both thought that Neil Kjos picture of the Red Lily was amazingly beautiful but it didn't have anything in it to identify the lodge so we gave him an honorable mention.   Again thanks to all of you, the photos were wonderful.  Realize that Jodee and I are not professional photo critics, we did the best we could and it was a lot of fun.  You can see other photos submitted by visiting Bent Creek Lodge's Face Book page and checking out the photo albums.
