Spring 2010

Vol 3, Issue 2

Greetings!

Our Snow Cheer
Doug & Jodee on Skis
Spring at BCL
Red Rhododendrons

What a difference a month can make!  We've gone from celebrating good snow in Idaho to relishing our spring flowers and warm sunny weather.  From our last newsletter you may recall we traveled to Yellowstone in March for a cross country ski trip with a group of friends.  We had a great time!  You can check out the pictures on our flickr site by clicking on our "snow cheer" picture.  We are now in full "Spring" duties back at the lodge.  As I work on our overdue newsletter, Jodee is up to her elbows in potting soil and new plants for the decks.   Don't yell foul!  I do get to carry the finished pots to their resting places and I was heavily involved with planting the garden, spreading the pine straw and refinishing the deck.  So we are spuced up and ready for a hopefully busy season. To get things started we have created  some specials, such as our April Room Sale, and new Biltmore Estate Packages, you may be interested in.  You can check them out on our website by clicking SPECIALS .

Secrets for Inngoers

What's New in A-ville

Biltmore Park, the planned town across the river from us is thriving.  131 Main and Travinia have become guest favorites.

Tupelo Honey has opened a new location on Hendersonville Rd.

The Biltmore Estate has opened a new retail area inside the Estate called Antler Hill.  It includes a late night tavern.

The rockslide on I-40 is expected to be cleared this month.  The detour thru Hot Springs is a nice drive.  There is also a rockslide on the Blue Ridge Parkway between us and 276.
Jodee Has a New Recipe - Spinach & Cheese Grits Frittata

Jodee has a new Frittata Recipe that is absolutely delicious, and beautiful.  I should know I've had it half a dozen times now.  She got the recipe from a magazine three years ago and filed it away for the right time since it isn't the easiest frittata by any means.  She first tried it out just for us a couple of weeks ago and got whole hearted approval from me.  But not trusting my untrained palatte she then served it to her book club, half of whose members have graduated from a culinary program.  They all loved it as well.  Feeling confident now she went ahead and tried it out on our guest at breakfast, including our recent celebrity, Senator Kay Hagan.  (you didn't hear that from me but yes she and her staff stayed here!)  It was a hit!!   If you would like to see a pdf file of the recipe click Spinach and Cheese Grits Frittata

Secrets for Inngoers

First, I must say that online Bed and Breakfast directories are wonderful.  They help you find the type of B&B or Inn you want and in the location you want.  They also help us find the guest we need to keep the doors open.  I don't know how we could ever have survived without them.  Booking online thru sites such as Webervations for us, is also a great tool for travelers.  On webervations guests are actually sending us a reservation request which we then confirm.  You can book the reservation any time you want, even when the Innkeepers are asleep.  It saves us time and is more accurate than a phone call sometimes.  With that being said, booking a room in a B&B or small inn thru a "Low" rate travel directory, where you actually pay the directory,  may not be your best option.  I highly recommend you call the B&B if you have any questions or needs.  You can tell a lot about how happy you will be at the B&B by how well the innkeepers help you on the phone.  If you need a discount or any special request you can probably negotiate a better deal directly with the innkeeper than through the "Low" rate travel directory.  This may not be true for airlines and hotel chains but it is for B&B's.   Have you seen the ad on TV with William Shatner using a big bully to force a hotel manager to accept his price?  Trust me, we innkeepers would rather give a deal to someone asking nicely than to someone twisting our arm.  So next time you are planning a trip to a B&B or small inn, don't hesitate to contact the business directly, (just not after midnight!)

Sincerly,
