Greetings!

Greetings from Bent Creek Lodge.  Summer is nearly over and it's a good time to be planning a fall get away to the mountains!  The air and the apples will be crisp, the trees will be beautiful, and it's just a great time to be in the mountains.  As always we are ready for the change of seasons, particularly this year as we reach a big milestone.  On November 5th we will have been in business for 10 years!  It's hard to believe that it has been that long but I guess it's true what they say,  "time flies when you're having fun", and you all have made it fun.   As the B&B business goes, we are almost old timers so we decided to share a few bits of wisdom we have acquired so far.

New Website and Video

Click on the title above to visit our new website.  It has a completely new look, new pictures and expanded "Activities" and "Dining" pages.  One of our frequent guests, Joe Hancock, provided the photo of the Lodge as well as the photo for the newsletter this month.  Click on this photoWaterfall in fall to visit his photography website.  The webdesign and other new photography was done by Alisa Moody of Wildcountry Studios.  The video was a real challenge since you have to talk with a camera pointed at you.  We managed to muddle thru it and with the help of a lot of editing we think it turned out ok.  There is a link for the video on the bottom of our website.  We would love to hear what you think of the website and the video, so tell us about it on your next visit or send us an email.

Tidbits We've Learned the First Ten Years

It is hard work!  But thank goodness not nearly as hard as most people think.

Appliances are obviously designed to last 9-1/2 years.

Work is fun but Inn Sitters Jim and Susan are  still better than anything since or before sliced bread.

Even when you build a new B&B you have to fix toilets.

Jodee is (almost) always right!

B&B guests are much nicer, more generous and more interesting than the general population!

Some guests become such good friends we feel guilty charging them.  (but we suffer thru it)

NC Arboretum Offers Green Wedding Program

wedding at arboretumWe get quite a few inquiries about outdoor weddings so we were glad to learn that the Arboretum is now offering its guidance, beautiful natural settings, and elegantly designed buildings for "green" wedding ceremonies.   Couples will learn to reduce the carbon footprint for their wedding ceremonies, use organically grown and natural products, and pledge to reduce consumeables.  The Green Weddings and receptions are offered Friday-Sunday evenings after 5 pm April - October.  For more information call Cindy Blankenship at 828-665-2492 ext. 216.  Of course we know of a very nice lodge nearby for your accomodation needs.

Mt. Trek Fitness Program Returns In November

Yoga classWe are hosting the Mt. Trek fitness program for the second time this November. It is a weight loss and fitness program that stresses extensive hiking, exercise, yoga, nutrition, stress management and lifestyle coaching in a mountain setting.  They are especially noted for their personal attention to their clients on and off the trail.  You can find out more about the program by clicking on the photo of Yoga at the Luhn house.  We will be providing all the lodging and food service for the program and our reservations are blocked from November 4th thru December 10 for their stay.  We apologize for any inconvenience if you were planning to visit during that time.  We do expect to be open for regular business next November.

Bird of the Month

Mother Dove in deck plantThanks to all of you that identified the bird in the last newsletter as a Cedar Waxwing.  This is our new "Bird of the Month" and mother of the year.  This Morning Dove is sitting on her third set of eggs for the year, all layed in a flower pot on our deck.  She patiently sits there while we water around her.  We were lucky enough to see one set of her chicks fledge as well as 6 new wrens that hatched from the big bird house mounted on the wall on the lower deck.

Ten Year Anniverasy Contest
lodge in progressTo celebrate our 10 year anniversary we have created a fun little contest to give all of you a very easy chance to win a $50 to $150 gift certificate redeemable for a new reservation at the Lodge between December 10th and March 31.  Enter by clicking on the image which will send you to the 10 question test about the lodge.  If you have only been here once and have a good memory you will probably know most of the answers.  (Like "What was the name of our first dog")  Those of you who have come many times may know them all.  Of the first 100 responses, every one that answers 8 correct gets a $50 G.C, 9 or more a $75 G.C., and those who get them all right will receive a $150 G.C.  Good luck.

Gift certificates are good for stays between December 10 and March 31 only and not good with any other discount.

Sincerly,                                                         Webpic
