Spring 2009

Vol 2, Issue 1

Greetings!

It may not look like spring with the recent snow storm blanketing most of the east coast but it is just around the corner and we are so ready.  In fact the other day with a dusting of Jodee with tulipssnow on the ground Jodee couldn't resist bringing home a splash of spring color with these tulips.  Here at the Lodge the Spyria and Yellow Jasmine are blooming and the Red Buds will be showing off soon.   As we look forward to the end of winter we also hope to see a beginning to the turn around in the economy.  With each piece of dire economic news we are reminded of how fortunate we are that so many of you have visited, become our friends, referred us to your families and friends, and shared your memories in our room books and online.  Thank you.  As a wee token of apprecitation we are waiving the two night minimum for weekends, and extending the Winter Special for all of March. (see the Special at the bottom of the page)

We also want to thank all of you that responded to our survey in the last news letter.  Your votes were 3 to 1 against TVs and 2 to 1 for an outside hot tub.  The comments were much stronger against the TVs than they were for the tub.  After a little investigating, we discovered there are major regulation hurdles to jump for public hot tubs.  We'll keep you posted on any progress.   We are going to look into putting TVs in just a couple of rooms.  Thanks to your help we also were able to donate $4000 to MannaFoods last year.

The Arboretum Has Something for Everyone

The N.C. Arboretum is our next door neighbor and we often send guests there to hike the trails but it has much more to offer.  The 434-acre site is nestled in one of the most beautiful natural settings in the United States. Mountain peaks bound the property's visual perimeters and 1.8 miles of the Bent Creek stream run through the center of the Arboretum.  A wide variety of classes and workshops are taught by the staff and other plant experts. Educational programs target all ages and range from bonsai demonstrations to how to stack dry stone.  Some classes are less than half a day and cost only $9.  This spring there are special weekend shows N.C. Arboretumfor Orchids, Rhododendrons, Dahlias and Roses.  Right now they have a great exhibit about the mysteries of bats and their next exhibit is H. Douglas Pratt and John C. Sill's BIRDS: The Science of Illustration. It is part of  The North Carolina Arboretum's celebration as an official part of the NC Birding Trail, this exhibit explores how art and science work together in Pratt and Sill's artistic illustrations of birds. So visit their website and check out what is happening at the Arboretum for your next visit by clicking on the picture.

Spring at the Biltmore Estate & the Festival of Flowers
Spring Garden Spring is perhaps the most beautiful time of year to visit the Biltmore Estate and thru April 3rd tickets bought online are only $37 for week days and $41 on Saturdays.   The popular "Festival of Flowers" starts April 4th thru May 17th and tickets are then $50 and $55.  Click of the picture to visit their web site.

Our Winter Projects

As usual we've used the winter season to do a few upgrades around the lodge.  We've added more leather dining room chairs for your comfort.  Of course,  we've painted guest rooms, and this time we added wainscoting in the Bird, Wildflower and Water rooms.   See if you notice anything else on your next visit!

Learn to become a Female Fly-Fisher
Female Fly FisherThe Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education is hosting an introduction to fly-fishing for women April 4th on the blue ribbon trout waters of the Davidson River.  It is an extention of the "Becoming an Outdoors Woman" program of the NC Wildlife Resourses Commission.
