went to the Science of Motion website and enthusiastically donated money so that I could witness this transformation. I had no doubt it would occur, even if Jean Luc reminds the reader that this is a enormous undertaking. What surprised me was that there was not the huge support that they needed. So I mentioned it to a few of my friends who have had the honor of watching this brilliant man reclaim a horse's soundness almost in front of their eyes, and they contributed. I said it before, selfishly, I want an opportunity to witness the change, the effort that makes the change, the work and tools that make the change. Soundness emerging from an unsound, perhaps lost cause horse makes me want to celebrate and run to my own barn with new tools to keep my sound horses performing at their absolute best until their last days...Jean Luc had horses that lived and moved beautifully, into their 30's, I think I am right...definitely into their 20's. It is unimaginable and moving! So, yes, there are many pressing causes right now. I know, the economy is in shambles, people are losing jobs still, and, in our face, pressing on our hearts, we see images of Haiti, and we donate if we can...no matter how much. I have donated to Manchester...and then to Haiti, they are not similar...but they both speak to the connection we have to the best in us. That may be simply reminding ourselves that our obligation and tenderness to human decency, whether with the earth, with animals or with our fellow human beings, is the greatest part of us...and we should nurture and promote that in all ways. I, for one, am going back to jean luc's page and I will donate again. I want Manchester to be saved, so we can save many, many more with new wisdom and understanding.

Manchester's 1st Videomanchester

Due to your support, the Manchester Project  has become a reality. However, more donations are needed in order to lead Manchesters reeducation to its full completion.  Manchester's first video is on its way to those who have helped us turn this difficult recovery into reality. The video document shows the horse in 2006. The lameness is already apparent. In fact, when I rode him in November 2009, Manchester was not in training, and the lameness was worse. On this first video, we highlight the gait abnormality by showing that area where, under saddle, the feeling of muscle imbalance was most concentrated.

The Manchester Project is a fabulous way to learn how to analyze gait abnormalities, as well as poor performances, and identify the source of the problem. Manchester has been lame since he was 4 years old, and both conventional riding techniques and therapies have failed him. We are inviting you on a journey that is all about exploring new perspectives. Primarily, this is about a practical application of advances in scientific knowledge. We do not attempt to adapt new ideas to old beliefs, but rather question old beliefs in the light of new ideas. Along the way, and whatever your horse's issue may be, our working hypothesis, as well as our training and riding techniques may offer solutions that no other approach has suggested.

Manchester is leaving Canada on February first and is scheduled to arrive in Florida February third. You can help in the realization of this fascinating adventure and experience through his re-education knowledge beyond the scope of conventional thinking. Donate today to Manchester's last-chance donation and Manchester's first video will be on its way to you.

Review of "One Hand On His Shoulder"
By Susan Hopf
Presented with a narration from the horse's perspective it is somewhat difficult to categorize this unique production. Part education, part musing, part art but mostly all inspiring.

Jean Luc Cornille has spent most of the last few decades dedicating himself to a better understanding of how the horse functions - both physically and mentally. This video is the culmination and blending of both of these aspects. Working with his long-time equine companion Lafayette II (sadly no longer with us) Mr. Cornille takes us on a journey of discovery.

Lafayette was a high-level event horse. While playing in his pasture he hit a stone and fractured his coffin bone. And in that instant his jumping career ended and the horse's recovery process begins. Forced into confinement, which he spends in a preeminently placed box stall labeled "Information" (a bit of humor that we find subtly intertwined throughout the story) Mr. Cornille was thusly compelled to assist this grand horse with his rehab in the best way possible. Well versed in the schooling of horses in-hand that was deemed the best course with which to begin.

Starting with elementary movements, such as simple turns, for first one minute, then two and then increasing the time and difficulty of the movements Mr. Cornille begins to notice how little shifts of his own body creates the same in the horse. As the horse heals the experiment continues and what is discovered is that the horse does not only follow the man but also instructs.

Many horse people will admit that horses have indeed taught them many things. What Mr. Cornille discovered moves our understanding beyond that - through his work with Lafayette (and subsequently more horses to follow) he discovered that horses possess an intelligence with which they had not yet been credited. Not mere instinct and more than just one horse intimately knowing one man Lafayette solved difficulties with creativity that he then shared with Mr. Cornille.

As an example working the canter in-hand. Once the horse was ready to do such collected work a cue from the ground was necessary to impart the wish for the canter depart. A tap on the shoulder with the whip made sense to the man but quite obviously disturbed the horse. While reconfiguring a different approach Mr. Cornille turned his left hand up and with that Lafayette cantered. A fluke - perhaps - but since the horse then chose it for his aid for canter depart, not just once but for each time afterward, it can only be concluded that it was indeed an instruction from horse to man.

We are taken through the discovery process from the beginning and it is a journey you will want to take again and again, I have had this video in my possession for less than a week and have watched it a half dozen times - each time I find more to inspire me.

Despite its serious implications the video is presented in a very light-hearted manner. Once you have watched this amazing interaction between man and horse I think you will find it quite difficult to think of the horse as anything other than a highly intelligent animal with a wry sense of humor and heart that never stops giving. And I think once you discover the intelligence and wisdom of Jean Luc Cornille he will also inspire you to learn and discover all that your horse has to give.

I have received no compensation for this review.

What is the Science of Motion.

Transversal Rotations in the Equine Vertebral Column.

  by Jean Luc Cornille

(In this study, the terms "Axial" and "Transversal" have the same meaning.)

Lateral bending of the equine vertebral column is always associated with a movement of transversal rotation. As well, axial rotation is always coupled with lateral bending. "In the cervical and thoracic vertebral column, rotation is always coupled with lateroflexion and vice versa." (Jean Marie Denoix, Spinal biomechanics and functional anatomy, 1999).

For the same lateral bending, two rotations are possible. One is correct, predisposing the horse to efficient use of his physique. The other one is inverted creating stresses and strains on the vertebral structures and consequently protective reflex contraction of the surrounding muscles.

Many riding and training principles, which have been conceived prior this knowledge, are unconsciously creating inverted rotation. These principles are ultimately hampering the horses' potential.

From the history of the scientific research to the practical application into riding and training principles, this abundantly illustrated study shows and explains how proper and inverted rotations look like, feel like, and can be corrected by appropriated riding techniques and gymnastic exercises

Perhaps A Setback With Basa
By Susan Hopf
basa

Despite our advances there continued to be a great distortion throughout the mare's topline anytime Basa was asked to trot on the longe. At these times Basa's body clearly showed evidence that her muscles were not supporting her core, which was, then putting downward drag her Nuchal ligament. This was displayed as a one-inch round taut cable just below her spine - the ligament was so tight it looked like it was cranking her head and neck up as well as distorting her pelvis.

Backing up a bit - After Basa's (indeterminate) accident and the subsequent behavior issues (wishing to harm all those on two legs) it was hard to diagnose her when the injury was new. She had to be tranquilized to the point where she could barely move or walk so that the vet could just lay a hand on her. Nothing was discovered by manipulation or ultrasound so we assumed a severe strain and perhaps some micro-tears and she was treated for such. As she had been progressing nicely, both in attitude and physical health, there was little reason to think that this diagnosis was incorrect or even incomplete. But since after many, many months she was still loath to have any weight on her back, other than a longing surcingle, another assumption that needed to be made was perhaps the tears were more than we had guessed them to originally be.

"One Hand on His Shoulder" DVD

 one hand on his shoulder

The most extraordinary in hand performance ever produced.

This is the masterpiece

The Performances, the Pictures, the Script, the Philosophy,

the Humor, the Music, the Relationship Between the Horse and the Man.

You don't need to be a horse person to love this production.

This is about beauty, friendship and art.

"I started the work in hand as a scientific experiment. The purpose was to see if a horse trained to always coordinate his body for the performance was capable to coordinate his physique by himself when a rider was asking for the movement. Knowing that as long as I will be on the saddle I will unconsciously help the horse, the thought was that such help would be impossible in hand. The horse, and all other horses after him, redirected the experiment toward a very different direction. The horse taught me as he will to everyone watching this video, a totally new equestrian philosophy."

 Jean Luc Cornille

Love the harmony and cherished relationship your videos bring to viewers. One hand on shoulder, wow! The gesture is so simple and yet so full of trust and love and shared being in the moment. Thank you! George Buggs

Join a man and a horse on an extraordinary and beautiful journey to a new level of communication and mutual respect.  An accident that could have ended the horse's life, not just his competitive career, instead provided an opportunity.  The man and the horse together found a path that allowed them to explore intelligence and communication beyond that experienced by the typical horse and rider.  Join Jean Luc and Lafayette II on an amazing exploration of in-hand work that allows both the man and the horse to expand their understanding of each other.Susan Schoettle

"One Hand On His Shoulder" is an amazing bit of fresh air. Breaking with tradition Jean Luc Cornille demonstrates, with great intellect and humor, just how much the horse can teach the humans with which they interact. With grace and artistry Mr. Cornille presents his work in-hand with Lafayette clearly showing that so much more can be accomplished if we accept and listen to the horse. A lovely video that brings back the art of horsemanship and has certainly inspired me to listen more and demand less of each horse I work with. Susan Hopf

What Is THe Science Of Motion

Finally, a CD book to bring it all together: the science, the training, for the good of the horse.

The accuracy of one's perception depends on the accuracy of the mental image associated with the feeling. Antiquated theories are wasting equines and humans talent.

This book is a new encyclopedia. It explains how the horse's vertebral column actually works. Each pertinent finding is explored from the rider and trainer perspective; how such new knowledge does modernize previous perceptions in terms of riding and training techniques.
