Peace Begins With Me

January 2008
Greetings!

The ending of one year and the beginning of another is a wonderful opportunity for reflection and deep consideration of who and how we want to be in this world.

I believe one of the most important tools for living a healthy and meaningful life is the power of 'intention'. Through intention we move from living as a reactive participant in the world, to being an active and creative contributor in the world.

It is my wish that you create an abundance of peace & joy for you and your family in 2008.

Creating New Year's Resolutions
Living With Intention
Ted head shot
The ending of one year and the beginning of another creates a wonderful opportunity to pause and consider how we might want to live different. I've learned that periods of reflection are essential if I want to live a healthy and successful life. The Greek philosopher Socrates was even more emphatic about the importance of reflection. He stated, "The unexamined life is not worth living."

In addition to reflection, there is value in deciding and declaring one's intentions for the year that is about to unfold. As a student of human behaviour, and an individual who is attempting to live more consciously, I've learned some lessons about declaring one's intentions. I share these ideas for your consideration.

When identifying targets for your New Year's resolutions, use statements that express your highest, heartfelt wish for yourself. Make your resolutions an act of kindness to yourself and others, rather than a punishment, deprivation, or shameful admission that you need to shape up in some way. I've learned to ask the question, "What action of mine will do the most good?" This question honours my capacity for choice and leads me in the direction of doing my highest good.

Second, state your intentions in your own words. Make your declarations meaningful and true for you, rather than an expression of someone else's ideas or expectations. New Year's resolutions are an opportunity for you to exercise your power of creation. You have the capacity to create your life, just as an artist creates a painting on a canvas. Life is intensely more joyful when one lives creatively and intentionally rather than reactively.

Third, focus your resolutions on your actions. This is where your power resides. Many mistakenly focus their attention on the behaviours  of others, and then become frustrated and discouraged when they don't achieve the desired results. The most important word in the phrase, "I resolve" is the word "I".

In today's society there is the tendency to measure success by what one does. Yet, your way of 'being' in the world is more important than what you 'do'. Our greatest gift to another is our way of being. Who will you 'be' in 2008? Will you be peaceful? Joyful? Grateful? Generous? Remember, you are a human 'being', not a human 'doing'.

In reflecting upon my life I've noticed it is easier for me to be in a place of peace and joy when those around me are behaving in kind and peaceful ways. My intention in 2008 is to be an agent of peace even when those around me are angry and agitated; especially when they are angry and agitated. To maintain my joy, especially when others are exercising their capacity for choice and finding their power. To be respectful, especially when the driver in front of me violates rules of courteous driving. To be in harmony, especially when I am under assault from those who are fearful and living in unconscious and reactive ways.

In 2008 I resolve to be peaceful, joyful, and happy and it is my hope that by living in this way I inspire others to a similar path. And when I loose my way and am not in harmony with my intentions, I invite you to gently remind me of my intentions.

Wishing you a peaceful and joyful New Year.

Ted

Words of Inspiration

"Don't equate your self worth
with how well you do things in life.
You aren't what you do.

If you are what you do,
then when you don't . . .
you aren't."

Wayne Dyer
