| Fear of "What If!" | |
First Impression
This month is dedicated to the fear of what if! Scary stuff! Those what if things we fear that get in our way. They stop us from being who we want to be and doing what want to do. We make excuses why we can't or won't do something. When the truth is it is our fears of what if that stop us. The more we dwell on it the bigger it seems. We can even spin ourselves into a frenzy. We have all done it at one time or another. Our fear of what if keeps us small!

Inspiration
We all have different what if fears. They start at a very early age. If you were like me you were afraid of what if there was a boogeyman under the bed. I can remember jumping from the doorway onto the bed and clearing the floor to avoid having him get me! LOL, luckily the bedroom I shared with my sister was very small.
The fear of what if continues to live on in our lives and no longer just limits itself to the boogeyman under our beds. It manifests itself into new fears. For example the fear of failure, fear of not being good enough, fear of not being liked or accepted, fear of judgment or criticism, fear of retaliation, fear of not being able to handle the situation, etc. In essence all just the fear of what if. How many times have you changed your mind about doing something because of saying to yourself, "but what if this happens"? You just what if'ed yourself right out of action. Think about this...it's a biggy! Fear is really a negative prediction about the future. It is only a perception or a prediction of a danger that might happen, and not necessarily an actual danger. Therefore, the fear is not real yet, it is merely a belief, prediction or perception. If we can learn to evaluate the real danger, as opposed to the perception of danger (the what if), we will get a more realistic view point and we will be less afraid to act.
People are never afraid of doing something, they are afraid of what might happen if they do it. For example when I went on a hot air balloon ride for my 50th birthday in Napa Valley, I wasn't afraid of floating in the balloon. I was afraid of it crashing into something. A recent trip to Florida I saw gators. I wasn't afraid of the gators; I was afraid they would bite me. People aren't afraid of being authentic and walking their walk; they are afraid of being judged or not liked.
Imagine what your life could be like right this second if the fear of what if had no impact on your decisions. How different would your journey be? WOW! Okay, so let's not get stuck on what we could have or should have done or been. I didn't ask you to make you feel bad...it was to help you see the possibilities if you stopped letting what if get in your way in the future!
Here are action questions to help you stop the fear of what if from stopping you! I suggest writing your answers down to make your plan of action more concrete.
- What is the worst case scenario?
- What is the best case scenario?
- What is the most likely thing to happen?
- What is my specific plan if the worst thing happens?
- What is my specific plan is the best thing happens?
- What is my specific plan if the most likely thing happens?
Whether or not we act is based on our perception of danger versus our confidence in being able to handle the situation. Having a clear plan of action will create the confidence to take action.
