"And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store? What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more?"

Personal Inspiration
So how do we change holiday stress to holiday success? Well to consistently succeed at anything we need to follow instructions or a system or a recipe. In this case we are going to follow a recipe. Not unlike recipes, holidays can be ruined when we add too much or too little of any ingredient, or add an ingredient we don't like or we don't allow enough time. The first step is to make a list of your ingredients for your holiday. Your ingredients are the tasks you want to accomplish, the places you want go, and the people you want to see. Let's start with the tasks. Tasks for example might include: - Bake cookies
- Buy presents & wrap
- Decorate tree & house
- Send cards
- Prepare meals
So how do we accomplish all these things? First of all we need to decide what it is really important to us. Maybe mom, grandma and great grandma may have always done certain things for the holidays...but that doesn't mean you have to. Decide as a family (immediate household), what it is you want included in your holiday recipe. If you don't like certain ingredients don't put them in! It is as simple as that. Once you decide on the ingredients, share the work load...who is going to do what, when and where. Make your plans based on a time line. Now have fun doing it together! Ohhh, but what about what others will think of you? All of the shoulds, coulds and woulds out there that you most surely will hear about later. Let that all go! In the big picture, how bad could it really be to not bake cookies or decorate or send cards or for that matter buy presents? In most cases if we establish and clarify our holiday plans up front we avoid surprises and fall out. In the end what is more important to you? Enjoying the holidays with your family or living up to other people's holiday expectations? |
Professional Inspiration
Now that we have the tasks taken care of, how do we see everyone and go everywhere that we are invited to and still have time to enjoy our holidays. Again, make a list of all your ingredients, people to see and places to go. As a family (immediate household) prioritize your ingredients. Are there any ingredients that you don't like or feel are necessary for your holiday recipe to succeed. If there are, here is a simple answer. Ready? Just say no. That's it. Ohhh, here comes all the shoulds, coulds and woulds again. Let them all go. It's time we started celebrating our holidays with what is important to us and not out of guilt or other people's assumptions or expectations.
Now you have just made time to see the people you really want to see and go where you really want to go. Don't just react to the holidays by letting them unfold. Make plans early on and schedule a breakfast, lunch, or dinner with those you want to connect with over the holidays. Maybe you have friends that know each other and would all gladly get together at one time to see you. Also, spread things out as much as you can so you will enjoy each visit more. So often we let everything fall into the last two weeks before the holiday and we become tired and overwhelmed. Where if it had been spread out over a month or two, we would have looked forward to the event and really enjoyed our self.
 | Decorated Trees |
One of the main ingredients in my holiday recipe is decorating the trees in the back yard with my husband Steve. Every year we plan which weekend will be our outside tree decorating weekend. Because we live in MN we plan early! Our tree decorating weekend this year was October 29-30th. It was a beautiful weekend. We allow one entire day so we can relax and enjoy ourselves. First we lay out all the lights on the lawn. I plug them in and change which bulbs need changing. In the meantime Steve is engineering how many extension cords and adapters he needs to light everything up. Now it's time to put the lights on the trees. Steve uses an extended pole and I follow him around and around the trees unrolling the lights as needed. Did I happen to mention we occasionally take a Peppermint Schnapps break!
Now all we have to do is wait for the day to come and we flip the switch! Another year of outside tree decorating done! AND we had fun. Wallah!
