First Impressions
This month's newsletter is dedicated to change! Yes, I know I have written about change before. However, most of us still struggle with change. The dictionary defines change as to become or make different. I would like to introduce you to a team who was not afraid to change and are now reaping the benefits!
| Dr. Steve Little, Team & Judy Kay |
Meet Dr. Steve Little and his team from Portland, Oregon. They surprised me by closing down their office for the day and taking the train from Portland to Seattle to attend my presentation for Pacific Northwest Dental Conference in June. Not only did they show up. They showed up wearing orange t-shirts (my brand color) with a picture from my past newsletter of a baby and a caption that read "Did you smile today?" They were also wearing my "Smile & Shine" bands. I was so proud and very happy to see them.
I had met Dr. Little and his manager Catherine when I was presenting for AADOM in Las Vegas 3 years ago. For those of you not familiar with AADOM, it is the American Association of Dental Office Managers. It is a great organization. Since that time they have implemented many of the teachings that I had shared at my presentation as well as in my monthly newsletters. They have been able to sustain these changes and are now working in an environment that is happy, healthy and high performing. Kudos to you and your team Dr. Little! Ta-Dah!!!
"I purchased and was mentored in a successful practice that came with employee baggage. I was fearful to make the changes that were required in fear of losing a significant portion of the practice. When my office manager and I saw the shine (light) of Judy Kay we had the whole staff change. Today we have a staff that is excited to be here and it is truly fun. Whatever you want to call it, "shine", karma etc. it is essential to have it BEFORE you can ever become successful!

Personal Inspiration
"Consider how different your life could be if you were willing to take the actions necessary to change it's direction."
~ Bonnie Ross-Parker
"I have tried many times before to make changes and have not succeeded at sustaining those changes. What makes you think we can make it happen this time?" This is a statement I often hear from a potential client.
Here is what I know for sure. Sustainable change takes small steps repeated consistently for long periods of time. Change means learning new things or doing things a different way which initially takes more thought, patience and effort. Therefore, the person who wants to make changes must really want to change to succeed. Otherwise, the pain of change will be greater than the pain of staying the same. It is human nature to choose the path of least resistance. I can't want the change more for my client than they want it for themselves or they won't succeed. I ask my clients the following questions to help understand their wants, needs and desires and qualify their potential to succeed. I will defer a client from starting the process with me until they are ready to commit to the following statements.
If a group practice, all the doctors are on board to work with a coach.
They agree on and support the changes they want to see happen.
On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being high they rank at least an 8 or above on importance for changes to happen.
They are willing to hold themselves and the team accountable by following thru with the agreed upon consequences.
They believe this is about enhancing the entire team's performance including them. They are open, enthusiastic and on board to grow and change as well.
If they embrace and support this mindset they are ready to start the process and move forward. Change is really a step-by step process. Attempts at change can fail when we miss any one of the following important steps. |
Professional Inspiration
Step One:
Establish a clear vision of what you or if a group practice, what the group wants to achieve. What does it look and feel like? Define even the smallest of details. What is your purpose? Why is it important to for you to have it this way? It is important to be clear and confident. People will only follow someone who is confident and knows where they want to go and what they want to achieve.
Step Two:
Get the right crew on your boat. Do you currently have the right crew on your boat? So many offices, so much drama, so much pain many times over just one person! Together as a team establish a standard of attitude and behavior. What does it look, sound and feel like? How will you interact with each other and your patients? What is appropriate and what is not.
Step Three:
Lead by example. It is one of the most important steps in sustaining change. Everything really does come from the top down. Set standards and don't allow double standards. Live and maintain those standards. If you want your team's focus to be what's in the best interests of the patients and the practice, yours must be as well. Remember actions speak louder than words.
Step Four:
Create a systematic approach to all tasks and responsibilities that you would like to grow and change. Together as a team practice verbal skills, role playing and the entire walk through before implementing it with your patients. Team meetings are an excellent way to introduce and implement new ideas, systems or protocols. Introduce one idea at a time and go deep and resolve instead of a data dump of many unresolved ideas that have to be revisited. Even if you accomplish only one item per monthly meeting you will have accomplished twelve new ideas, systems or protocols per year.
Step Five:
Establish accountability and consequences.
Accountability starts with everyone being equally accountable to the ideas, systems, protocols and standards that were set. No double standards for anyone including the doctor or manager or you divide the team. Develop a protocol of consequences for when there is a lack of accountability.
The reality is that to change we must go through a transformation zone. It's not easy being in transformation. Thoughts, beliefs and habits are changing. It can create a sense of groundlessness and uneasiness. When we're in the transformation, our first impulse will be to revert to old habits because they feel comfortable. Our goal is to hang in there until the change is complete. Knowing that transformations are part of the change process can help us have the courage to overcome the discomfort and the uneasiness.
In the end, change requires letting go of what we've always known and done to allow in something new.
You are a choice away from change! |
