First Impressions
This month's newsletter is about change. Changing what? Whatever we choose. How we live our life, what we do in life and who we surround our self with in life is our choice. That is if we are willing to take the steps to make things happen, to live a life we choose.
If we don't change the direction we are headed, we will end up where we are going. ~ Chinese Proverb |
Personal Inspiration
Change for most of us can be difficult. Even when it is in our best interests to make change. Fear is what stops many of us from taking the first step to succeed and sabotages us from reaching our dreams.

Consider how different your life could be if you were willing to take the actions necessary to change it's direction.
~ Bonnie Ross-Parker
What do we fear? The most common and powerful fears are; fear of the unknown, fear of not knowing how or what to do, and fear of failing.
Fear of the unknown. We have a tendency to fear the unknown much more than reality, regardless of how bad things may be in real life. We humans are extremely gifted at adapting to even the worst of situations. Adapting is what enables us to live in dysfunction or misery and consider it normal life.
It is also human nature to focus on the negative. It's what we highlight and talk about. Just listen to the news or look at the front cover of the papers. Outcomes or results we imagine are always more negative than what normally happens in real life. Just think about the last time you worried about something. Was the outcome or result even close to how bad you imagined it could be? Regardless of how scary the unknown was...we seem to survive it just fine. Usually wondering why we worried so much about it in the first place. Try to remember that the next time you want to make change and are worried about the outcome.
Fear of not knowing how. Often times when we don't know how to do something, we don't even try. The reality is we are constantly learning new things that we didn't know how to do last year or maybe even yesterday. If we take things one step-at-a-time, research the topic, and utilize the strengths of others we can learn how to do most anything. Well, that is only if our heart and mind's desire is to learn.
Fear of failing. This is the biggie that stops most of us dead in our tracks. We don't want to fail. We believe others will judge us harshly. We fear losing the respect and relationship of others. When some people fail they totally give up because they believe they are a loser. That label of loser is what stops them every time from taking that first step. Truth is many of the most happy and successful people have failed many times. They just have a different attitude about failure. They see it as a necessary step to continue to grow and learn. If you never fail, it means you aren't pushing yourself to learn or try new things. There is a phrase..."Failing Forward"...in other words learn from your failures to move forward. John C. Maxwell wrote a phenomenal book on this subject titled "Failing Forward" that I highly recommend.

Now that we know that fear can stop many of us from taking even the first step to change...how do we overcome that fear?
| Baby Steps |
We overcome our fears by changing how we react to fear. We overcome our fears by changing our habits and patterns. We overcome our fears by realizing being frightened is not a good enough reason to not take the first step. Even baby steps will create change.
My friend and colleague Amanda Gore wrote the following about changing your life.
If things are not the way you want them to be in your life, own that and change yourself. It takes a bit of work!
- You can repeatedly tell yourself a different story.
- Make it a goal to become aware of these unconscious patterns taking away your peace and joy.
- Put a note to remind you on your computer or the fridge!
- You can catch yourself every time you fall into an old pattern and stop.
- You can repeatedly focus on the new behaviors you would rather have.
- You can practice the new patterns CONSISTENTLY (for at least 30 days) until the new ones are set as the operating system of your brain, and they reach the top of your 'brain google' search instead of the old patterns.
A friend of mine who is very uncomfortable with change made the following statement. "I am not like all you brave people who are not afraid to constantly try new things." Huh! My response to him was, "Are you kidding me, there is never a time I am not afraid to try something new. I just refuse to let fear be the reason to not do something." I think about every time something new comes my way. What instantly pops into my head is...I don't know how to do it...and what if I fail!
The dialogue between me and my stories goes something like this. So you don't know how...you can learn? You can google it and you can ask others who already know how for advice. You don't have to know all the steps to start...just the first one. If I fail...hmmm...worst case scenario...I fail. Those who love me will still love me...those who don't, don't matter. I have failed before and it didn't kill me! At least I will have tried and have no regrets. So now you all know I talk to myself often.
My dad taught me the worst failure in life is having regrets at the end for what you didn't do! Thanks dad for your insight, I miss you daily.
Here is how to make change your choice:
- Take some time to think about your life.
- What brings you joy and happiness?
- What would you like to see different?
- Identify limiting beliefs.
- Establish new goals and objectives.
- Take baby steps of change...instead of over committing and overwhelming.
- Practice by repeating your baby steps over and over to create new habits. (new habits form after somewhere between 20 & 90 times of repetition).
- Don't give up the first time you go back to your old ways. It's just like being on a diet. Sometimes we cheat by eating a piece of cake or two...three...I am thinking a big delicious piece of milk chocolate cake with rich, thick and yummy chocolate frosting. YUMMM! Oh, where was I? Sorry lost my focus for a second. I'm back. We sometimes fall off our diet we sometime fall back into old habits for a time or two...doesn't mean we throw the towel in and call it quits. Just identify the breakdown and start again.
- Start each day with good intentions and positve self-talk. My wise friend Louise Griffith, Passion and Greatness Coach, Speaker, and Author shared the following: Lose the verbiage I have to and replace it with I get to or I want to. It will change your mindset and how you feel immediately. If you would like more information about Louise I inivite you to visit her website at www.oneshininglight.com.
Choose to overcome your fears that are stopping you and change your habit patterns one baby step at a time. Change is really only a choice away!
