"It takes a little courage, and a little self -- control. And some grim determination, If you want to reach the goal. It takes a deal of striving, and a firm and stern-set chin. No matter what the battle, If you really want to win. There's no easy path to glory, There's no road to fame. Life, however we may view it, Is no simple parlor game; But it's prizes call for fighting, For endurance and for grit; For a rugged disposition and don't know when to quit."

First Impressions
This month's newsletter is about having grit! The dictionary describes it as having firmness of mind or spirit: unyielding courage in the face of hardship or danger. I felt the need to write on this topic based on recent conversations I had with some very close friends who are dealing with hardships. Life has a way of pulling the rug right out from under us. We usually can survive when it happens only once or twice in a row. However, when it seems as if the odds are stacking up against us, we can get lost in the fear and hardship and lose our grit to carry on.

Personal Inspiration
It takes determination and strength to deal with the adversities of life. It takes grit! Grit to not let the setbacks get you down or the roadblocks get in your way. Grit to not become overly discouraged when things don't go as you planned. Grit to not give up when you get resistance or when the competition gets stiff. Grit to not lose focus from all the noise in life. Grit to not hop from one thing to the next without completing what you started. Grit to stay focused on what is authentic to your journey.
Grit is really about keeping on keeping on. Grit to take the first step even when we don't know all the answers up front. Grit to get back on the horse when we have been bucked off again and again. Grit to start over again...a new career, a new home, a new marital status, a new life. Grit to see failure as learning. Grit to show up every day and be our best us no matter how challenging or scary it may seem. Grit to continue the journey!
| Focus on the rainbows not the dark sky. |
Knowing and doing are two different things. We may know and understand what we need to do to move forward. Yet still feel lost and stuck in limbo, unable to move forward. So how do we get unstuck? How do we find our way? We overcome the fear and hardships by understanding what having grit means in thoughts, words, and actions and challenging ourselves to live it daily. I love using acronyms. At my age it helps me remember things. LOL Here is my version of grit. G.R.I.T stands for the following: G - Greatness R - Relationship I - Inspiration T - Trust Greatness: Believe in yourself. Believe you make a difference in the world. Believe that what you do counts for something. Your words and actions can inspire and have a positive impact on others. Ponder this thought. I was designed and created to be me. You were designed and created to be you. No accidents. On purpose. Pretty awesome! We have our strengths and our weaknesses and they help us to define and achieve our purpose in life | Pretty Awesome! |
Relationship:
You can't do it alone. Living life is a team sport. Relationships can give us grit when we lift each other up in times of fear and hardships in life. Reach out to others, make connections and build sincere, strong, sustaining relationships. You can build this type of relationships by being open respectful and understanding of other's beliefs, opinions and assumptions, their truths. What I refer to as their B.O.A.T. an acronym for beliefs, opinions, assumptions and truths. Hmmm...an acronym within an acronym...so does that make is a plural acronym? Scary where the mind goes sometimes isn't it. Okay, where was I?
We have to understand the perspective of others to make a connection and this requires exceptional listening. It requires understanding others, their strongest desires and their deepest fears. It requires an awareness of their joys and their sorrows. It requires experiencing life walking in their shoes. When you listen, when you hear, and when you truly understand the needs of others you will connect in a way that builds sincere, strong, sustaining relationships. |
Professional Inspiration
Inspiration:
One of the biggest grit motivators in the universe is a sense of meaning and purpose. Throughout history people have risked life, security, and wealth for something greater than themselves. Cures for diseases, discovering new frontiers, overcoming oppression or creating a better world just to name a few. We all want a chance to take part in something that is greater than us. Something that is meaningful and important that makes a difference in this world. We want to know that our life made a difference. That we have a purpose to our existence. I ask you to take a moment and think about what will you leave behind in this world to show that you made a difference? For those of us who are making a difference...Ta-Dah! And for those of us who aren't...
No worries. Every day we have the power and the opportunity to change the rest of our journey. Today is a new day. Today is the first day of the rest of your life.
Trust: To build trust you have to be truthful to yourself and others. Trust starts with us trusting in ourselves. To build trust in ourselves we have to become credible by fulfilling our duties. Doing what we said we would do, when and how we said we would do it. Trust is not only built by our past record but more importantly what we do now at this moment. It is only when we trust in ourselves that others will trust in us as well.
Building trust from others comes from you trusting them first. You cannot expect others to trust you if you don't trust them. Building trust begins when one person takes a risk and opens up to another. You have to ante up first. That can be scary because when you trust you are taking a chance. You're betting that others will take good care of the information and the feelings you share. You're taking a risk that others won't take advantage of you or harm you. You're relying on them to do what is right. You're counting on them to do their part. Especially in the beginning, there's absolutely no guarantee that if you trust first the other party will reciprocate. Even so you have to be the first to trust. Someone has to start the positive cycle of trust, and it starts with you! Believe in your greatness and ability to make a difference; build sincere, strong, sustaining relationships; insire and motivate yourself and others with purpose in life; and finally trust in yourself and mankind and you will have the grit you need succeed on your daily journey!
