First Impressions

This month's newsletter is dedicated to happiness!  One of my absolute all time favorite topics.  Not a surprise to those of you who know me.  Many often call me sunshine because of the happiness and energy I radiate... Or as my husband Steve refers to it as, "The orange bubble that surrounds me."

Emotions - Yellow Balls

Happiness is really the key to whether we succeed or not in life.

I am not making this stuff up...just because I love to be happy...I am thrilled to say this is backed by Harvard Research.

I recently read an awesome book on happiness, "The Happiness Advantage", written by Shawn Achor.  Shawn is a Harvard professor who shared the following research information based on the results of over 200 scientific studies on nearly 275,000 people.

We become more successful when we are happier and more positive.  For example, doctors put in a positive mood before making a diagnosis show almost 3 times more intelligence and creativity than doctors in a neutral state, and they make accurate diagnoses 19% faster.

Optimistic sales people outsell their pessimistic counterparts by 56%.  Students primed to feel happy before taking math achievement tests far outperform their neutral peers.  It turns out that  our brains are literally hardwired to perform at their best not when they are negative or even neutral, but when they are positive!  Yet in today's world, we ironically sacrifice happiness for success only to lower our brain's success rates.

Happiness leads to success in nearly every area of our lives, including marriage, health, friendship, community involvement, creativity, and in particular, our jobs, careers, and businesses.  Data shows that happy workers have higher levels of productivity, produce higher sales, perform better in leadership positions, and receive higher performance ratings and higher pay.  They also enjoy more job security and our less likely to take sick days, to quit, or to become burned out.  Research shows that unhappy employees take more sick days, staying home an average of 1.25 days per month, or 15 extra sick days a year.  In one study, I am glad to not be a part of, researchers gave subjects a survey designed to measure level of happiness - then injected them with a strain of cold virus.  A week later, the individuals who were happier before the start of the study fought off the virus much better than less happy individuals.  They didn't just feel better, either; they actually had fewer symptoms of illness - less sneezing, coughing, inflammation, and congestion. What this means is that companies and leaders who take measures to cultivate a happy workplace will not only have more productive and efficient workers - they'll have less absenteeism and lower healthcare expenditures.

Happy CEO's (Dentists) are more likely to lead teams of employees who are both happy and healthy, and who find their work climate conducive to high performance.  The list of benefits of happiness in the work place goes on and on.

The Happiness Advantage is why cutting-edge software companies have foosball tables in the employee lounge, why Yahoo has an in-house massage parlor, and why Google engineers are encouraged to bring their dogs to work.  These aren't just PR gimmicks.  Smart companies or practices cultivate this kind of working environment because every time an employee experiences a small burst of happiness, they get primed for creativity and innovation.  They see solutions they might otherwise have missed.  CEO Richard Branson has said that, "more than any other element, fun is the secret of Virgin's success."  This isn't just because fun is, well fun.  It's because fun also leads to bottom-line results.

Do I have your interest in becoming happier now?

Professional Inspiration

The physical side of happiness gives us a chemical edge?  Positive emotions flood our brains with dopamine and serotonin, chemicals that not only make us feel good, but dial up the learning centers of our brains to higher levels.  They help us organize new information; keep that information in the brain longer, and retrieve it faster later on.  They enable us to make and sustain neutral connections, which allow us to think more quickly and creatively, become more skilled at complex analysis and problem solving, and see and invent new ways of doing things.

We even literally see more of what's around us when we're feeling happy.  A recent University of Toronto study found that our mood can actually change how our visual cortex - the part of the brain responsible for sight - process information.

Detour to happiness!

How do we become happy?  We tend to seek happiness when happiness is actually a choice!  It's a choice we make every second of every day.  We can choose to be happy.  Here are some ways to inspire happiness.

Be aware of what is good and right.  What do you appreciate about yourself, your work, your world and the people in it?

See the value in all things even little things.  No matter how normal, mundane, or simple things seem; value them, value yourself, value your world, and value the people in it.  Don't take yourself, anything or anyone else for granted.  Life is uncertain and unexpected.  Life changes in a moment!  How could we possibly take anything for granted?  Look around; what would you miss if it were no longer?

Feel Gratitude.  Be thankful for all that you are and can be.  You were created and designed to be you.  Just think about that for a moment!  It's pretty awesome!  Practice saying thank you and giving thanks everyday!

Verbally reward yourself and others; good job, way to go, you rock!  Your mind believes what it hears.  Even when it's our own voice it hears.   So often we tear ourselves down with same old stories playing over and over with negative self-talk.  We've all done it.  The I am not good enough, what was I thinking, I messed that up, I failed.  Instead stop the negative talk and start over with positive, I can do it, I did it, I rocked, I am good enough, I am worth it and build you up!

It is time to celebrate everything, even the little things in life.  We take things so seriously.  We get so busy; we don't allow time to celebrate.  If you don't make time to celebrate you will lose the joy in your life.  You really will.  I am sad to say I have met many who have.

I say resurrect the word Ta-Dah and add it to your daily vocabulary.  Do you remember when you were little kid and you did something or more likely attempted to do something like a somersault and you stood up and threw your hands up in the air and shouted Ta-Dah!  Everybody clapped and it felt so good.  Look for something each day to celebrate.  When you find it, throw your hands up in the air and shout Ta-Dah for all that is and all that you are.  Now doesn't that feel soooo good!
