"Show sincere appreciation - It must be genuine, from the heart.  It should be specific.  It should be regular - not just special occasions.  Celebrate with your people whenever and wherever you can.  It's good for the soul...yours and theirs.

First Impressions

This month's newsletter is dedicated to practicing the Art of Appreciation.
The dictionary defines appreciation as awareness, value, gratitude, and recognition.  These are the four  cornerstones we will be covering in October's newsletter.

  Appreciate
  "Make it a habit to tell people thank you. To express your appreciation, sincerely and without the expectation of anything in return. Truly appreciate those around you, and you'll soon find many others around you. Truly appreciate life, and you'll find that you have more of it."

~ Ralph Marston

Personal
Inspiration

Awareness is where appreciation begins.  We must first know and be aware of what is good and right around us.  What makes us smile?

I believe we get so busy in our lives we no longer see what what is good and right...we just take it for granted.  Things in life become routine and everyday blah.  To create awareness we need to temporarily get rid of all the distractions and noise and just stop to really think!  What is it that is good and right in our personal and professional life?  Grab a pen and paper and write everything you can think of.  Writing things down creates clarity while also creating a list we can revisit.

At work, get an easel pad and markers and have a team meeting.  Ask everyone to share what they feel is good and right in the practice.

Value is the next cornernstone.  Review your  awareness list of what is good and right.  What value do these things bring to the team, doctor, practice and patients?  What value do they bring to your family, and friends?  List the value behind each good and right idea listed.  The list helps clarify and reinforce the value and benefits of continuing to do what is good and right.
Whenever you are feeling life has become hard and things don't seem to be going your way, take a moment and write your awareness and value list.  You will very soon be on the road to recovery!

Gratitude
is the third cornerstone of appreciation.   Once we are aware and value what is good and right, it's easy to feel grateful.  Take time each day to review your list and feel gratitude for what is in your life.  The Law of Attraction states that "Whatever we focus on grows!"  Why not grow good, right, and value?

Professional Inspiration

Recognition is the fourth and largest cornerstone in practicing appreciation.  It is important to recognize and give thanks to the people who help make our world a better place.  Who do you know that helps make a difference in your life?  No matter how large or small, acknowledge and show appreciation.

There are many ways to show appreciation.  Sincere verbal communication with appropriate body language expressed with a genuine sense of gratitude is one way. Even if it is difficult to express your appreciation, most team members will appreciate the effort and the attempt at saying thanks.  It can be as simple as saying, "Hey great job on....thanks!

When offering verbal praise to a team member, it is best to be very specific about the actions or qualities that you express appreciation for.  Direct eye contact also helps create a feeling of sincerity.

Words of appreciation for coworkers should be centered on positive appraisals of their work ethics, commitment to the company or other professional qualities if they are of the opposite sex. This ensures that professional decorum remains intact in the workplace and shows that you respect the integrity of your coworkers.

Appreciation letters or cards are another option for expressing gratitude, especially if you are more comfortable expressing yourself with written words. Generic, store bought cards should never be given as-is. Taking the time to write a personal message and a few words of encouragement from the heart, will make the gesture seem sincere.  A thank you email just isn't the same, nothing beats a handwritten note.

Pulling your own weight in the office is one of the most sincere expressions of appreciation and respect in the workplace.

Picking up the tab for lunch or bringing in something homemade to share is another option for expressing your appreciation. A plate of cookies, fudge, or other sweets is always welcome. You can also opt for a veggie tray or fresh fruit basket if most of the office is dieting or at least attempting to. :)

These are some ways you can show gratitude and appreciation.  Unspoken gratitude and appreciation is a wasted opportunity.

   "To laugh often and much;

to win the respect of intelligent people

and the affection of children;

to earn the appreciation of honest critics

and endure the betrayal of false friends;

to appreciate beauty;

to find the best in others;

to leave the world a bit better,

whether by a healthy child,

a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;

to know even one life has breathed easier

because you have lived.

This is to have succeeded."

Situation:
It bothers me that my team's focus seems to only be on the drama in the office instead of what is really important in the practice.

Solution:
Steps to resolution:
Change your focus from, how do I get them to not focus on the drama?   Instead, what is the best thing I can do to get my team to do more of what I want them to do?  Build a culture of acknowledgement and appreciation where people feel recognized for every little thing they do.  They will feel visible, and they will feel as if they're appreciated and acknowledged.  I want them to know that what they do is being seen, is being thought about, and is being celebrated.  That is the culture that will create and grow productivity
