Intending or wanting to do something and actually doing it aren't the same.  The difference is ACTION.  And the thing that helps ensure action happens is ACCOUNTABILITY.

"One of the annoying things about believing in free choice and individual responsibility is the difficulty of finding someone to blame your problems on.  And when you find somebody, it's remarkable how often his picture turns up on your driver's license."

First Impressions

Just hearing the word Accountability, can give the majority of us an ugh feeling.

What usually pops into mind is the why I can't do it questions like... "what am I responsible for now, when and where do I fit that into my already busy schedule, what if don't know how, or the question that stops many of us in our tracks;

what if I fail?

April's newsletter is dedicated to the magic in mastering accountability in a simple, systematic, synergistic approach.  The three fundamentals are Me, The Baby, and The Elephant

Personal
Inspiration

Let's start with the ME part because it's where accountability begins.  When we commit to taking personal responsibility for a task or a behavior and  follow up with actions that support our commitment we create accountability.

BJ Gallahger and Steve Ventura wrote a top ten list on how to create personal responsibility.  I had shared the list in a past news letter but feel it is worth sharing again.  When you embrace and implement these fundamentals you can't help but create accountability.

10.  I won't wait for others to take the first step.

9.   If it is to be, it's up to me.

8.   If not me who, if not now when.

7.   Let me take a shot at it.

6.   I will not pass the buck.

5.   You can count on me.

4.   It is my job.

3.   Just do it!

2.   I will.

1.   ME!

Personal Responsibility

Taking RESPONSIBILITY

Ever wonder who they are?  They seem to be everywhere.  They must be a big and powerful group with a great deal of influence, because we sure do talk about them a lot:

They should know better!  That's their problem!  They need to do something about this!  It's all because of them!  They're the ones who fouled things up!

They WE should know better!  That's their OUR problem!  They WE need to do something about this!  It's all because of them US!  They're WE'RE the ones who fouled things up!

Professional Inspiration

The Baby is task management.

 Baby with fist

The tasks each team member is responsible to complete on a daily basis are their babies.  They are the parent.  If something  comes up where they cannot care for their baby they need to find another team member to take over the care of that baby.  A babysitter.  Parents may only request sitters for babies (tasks) that must be completed during the current day.

The parent cannot just leave the baby on the counter or the floor in a baby pile or propped up somewhere in a corner hoping someone will see it and take care for it.  They cannot toss the baby at a team member as they walk by and hope they catch
the baby.  They cannot force the care of their baby on another team member.  Aren't these some things that happen with our tasks when we feel we are too busy?

They must ask another team member to take over the care of their baby.  The team member must agree before they can hand over the care of their baby.  The parent's role is still not complete until they inform the babysitter exactly what they have done so far to care for the baby as well as expectations to complete the care of the baby for the day.  At the end of the day, the babysitter is now responsible to hand the baby back to the parent and update the parent regarding the care completed as well as what is needed next to complete the baby's care.

If for some reason the babysitter gets too busy to care for the baby, they cannot just give the baby back to the parent and say I can't do it.  The babysitter has assumed responsibility for the baby's care. They can ask the parent if they can take the baby back.
However, if the parent can't, the babysitter is responsible to find another babysitter who will agree to take over the care of the baby (by following the same protocol).  They must inform the parent who is the new babysitter.  At the end of the day, the current babysitter is now responsible to hand the baby back to the parent and update the parent regarding the care completed as well as what is needed next to complete the baby's care.

It is important to end each day with the baby alive and healthy.  Treating a task like a baby will create a high standard of accountability.

   Elephants

The third fundamental in accountability is the Elephant, behavior management.

The 5 steps to behavior management, in other words addressing the Elephant in the room are;

  1. Together as a team establish a standard of behavior in your office, to include attitude, communication and actions.
  2. Hold everyone equally accountable, no exclusions or exceptions or you divide the team.
  3. Together as a team, establish protocol on how to address inappropriate behavior before it ever happens.  This will enable the team to feel confident to hold each other accountable.  Everyone on the team has given each other permission.
  4. Monitor behavior daily at your morning huddles by talking about the previous day's successes and growth opportunities.
  5. Maintain as a team and update as a team when changes are necessary.

The elephant in the room will now be a well adjusted, happy, healthy, high performer.

Situation:
Whenever I want to introduce something new to my office to raise the bar I get resistance.  The first thing I hear from my staff is why, what are we doing wrong?  I try to reinforce that they are doing things well and yet there is always room to grow.   I want my office to continue to grow and yet I don't want to upset my team.

Solution:
Steps to resolution:

Have a team meeting and share with you team your vision and goals to continue to grow and learn as a team.  Use your continuing education as an example.  Remind them how you continue to take courses to raise the bar for yourself and you expect the same from your team.  Reinforce that in order to continue to provide exceptional service, it is necessary for the entire team to continue to learn and grow.  It is important that your team understands this is not up for negotiation. Their continued working relationship with you rests on their decision to support your business decisions 100% with both words and actions.  They are not a victim.  They have a choice to either support you and your business decisions for which they are  compensated or they can support someone else.
