" The Chinese say, "The best time to plant a tree was always 20 years ago.

The second best time is always today.

Funny how planting trees and taking action on the life of your dreams are the same that way. "

First Impressions

December is a magical time of year for a child.  A time to wish and dream.  I remember when I was a little girl, how excited I was when December finally came.  The JC Penny's and the Sears Christmas catalog would arrive.  In our house, they were referred to as the wish-books.  I would spend hours poring over all the amazing toys that were displayed so temptingly on each page.  FYI, being the youngest it wasn't easy to log wish-book time.  They were often coveted by my older brothers and sisters.  Talk about dog-eared pages....

We were each allowed to choose one larger gift and several smaller ones.  Oh, what difficult decisions we had to make.  Often we would consult with one another as to which would be just that perfect gift.  What to choose?  What to choose?

I would finally make my decision and write it down, only to change my mind a day later.  Thank goodness Santa (alias mom & dad, oops, sorry for those of you who still believe) gave us a couple weeks to vacillate back and forth.

When I think back, I remember having as much if not more fun and excitement just wishing and dreaming as I did receiving the actual gift.

     Gift & Magic

I realize as an adult the same still holds true for me.  I love to dream about what could be.....The prospects of infinite possibilities is totally exhilarating to me.  Oh, what new amazing gift in life is coming my way?

Some of those infinite possibilities have now become reality.  Once again reinforcing that the wishing and dreaming (the journey) are just as much fun and exciting as receiving the gift.  So, find your own wish-book and have fun wishing and dreaming to your hearts content!

We have a dream inside ourselves,
A gift to us at birth,
To guide us and protect us
On our journey on this earth.
We all have something special,
Each one of us' unique
You have to find the courage
To find the peace you seek.
So dream your dream and live your dream
Don't be afraid to try.
Just take your soul by the hand
And let your spirit fly.

Personal Inspiration

I think as adults we forget the power in daring to dream.  We analyze over and over why we can't or won't succeed.  We list every possible obstacle and make a common sense decision that it is unrealistic or impossible based on the odds.  But, we gave it a shot right?  Or did we really?

Look at all the amazing success stories that happen in our world.  People are reaching their dreams everyday even when they are up against impossible odds.  For example, the mountain climber or downhill skier with only one leg.

They did not focus on the obstacles or odds or they would have never started.  Instead, they put their focus on taking one-step at a time towards their dream.

What would your life look like right this moment if you dared to dream?  Go ahead, just take that first step and see.  Who knows where it will lead you.

Professional Inspiration

December is a magical time to dream of giving!  I think back again to when I was a little girl.  I remember thinking how sad mom and dad must be because they didn't receive any toys.  Yet, there they were smiling, laughing and having just as much fun if not more then us kids did when we opened our presents. It wasn't until I was a little older that I learned the true gift was in the excitment and fun of giving.

"Giving people a little more than they expect is a good way to get back a lot more than you'd expect."

Think about what it is like to work with your colleagues, employees and employers.  How different would your work place be if everyone focused on what they could give or do for each other.

So, instead of thinking what's in it for me, we think about what's in it for them.  We ask ourselves, what could we do to make their life easier or better at work?

Can you imagine the amazing work environment this kind of thinking would generate?   Everybody would be helping everybody to succeed.  The results, a happy, healthy, high performing culture!  Hmmm...sounds pretty good doesn't it?

Well, all it takes is one step.  Here it is!  Ask everyone on your team to dedicate the month of December, as WIIFT Month (what's in it for them month).  There is only one rule.  Before anyone takes any actions or makes any decisions, they must first ask themselves what's in it for them (by them I mean others including patients, colleagues, employees, employers).  Their actions and decisons must always be in keeping with what benefits the other person most.

Just watch and see the magical changes.  Your gift is the excitement and fun of dreaming up different ways to benefit others.  WIIFT (what's in it for them) will far outweigh the WIIFM (what's in it for me)!

So, this December dare to dream!

Practicing Solutions

Situation:

I have a team member who is unwilling to assist others unless she is directly asked by the doctor or manager.  Otherwise, she responds to others requests for help that it is not her job!

Solution:

Steps to resolution:

First, meet as a team.  Discuss the importance of team members consistently working together for the greater good of the patients and practice.  Talk about what that means.  For example, getting cross-trained to help others when they need or ask for help.  Keeping tuned into the flow of the day, always looking to see what can be done to make it fly smoothly.  Working together effectively and efficiently is important for everyone to understand and be willing to do.

Meet with her in private if her attitude and behavior does not change.  Explain that for her to be on the team she must act as part of the team.  Team members must be willing to share in the duties that they are trained and qualified to do.  There is no I in Team!  Let her know that her future actions will determine her outcome on the team.
