Inspiration

I wasn't going to be a speaker when I started my business.  I was just going to be a coach.  My audiences at the time were primarily highly educated dentists, with so many degrees they could roll them out.  I thought I couldn't possibly speak in front of them.  They have a lot more education than I do.  Why would they want to come listen to me?

I shared this with a mentor of mine.  He looked at me with his hands on his hips, and said "Judy Kay!  Aren't you about bored with that story by now?"

Oh, that hurt......and then, then I got angry...I thought, you don't know what you're talking about!  It is true!  And then I thought a little longer, and I thought, I am bored with that story...so what am I going to do to change it.

I challenged it by:
  • Identifying my fears & worries
  • Establishing new goals & objectives
  • Creating a step-by-step action plan
  • Practicing, practicing, & practicing
  • Taking the first step

and Zoe a 5lb Yorkie!

My first speaking date, was a February in front of a small group of dentists in Duluth, MN.

Today I to have audiences that range from small groups of less than 30 to large associations with over 1000 attendees.

I am no longer afraid; I challenged my fear and changed my reality!

Professional Inspiration

Recently, a client was sharing his regrets over the didn'ts and should haves in his life.  How he wished he would have been less afraid and more daring in his decisions and choices.  He was concerned that he had let life pass him by and he was on the downhill slide.

Do you ever wonder how some people seem to throw caution to the wind and are fearless taking chances?  Or are they?

Large amounts of self-discipline are needed to deal courageously with all the fearful events in life.  The fact is everyone is afraid, and usually of many things.  This is normal and natural.  If everyone is afraid, what is the difference between those who are willing to take a chance and those who do not?  The only difference is that the chance taker disciplines himself to control the fear, to deal with the fear, and to act in spite of the fear.

"You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.  You must do the thing which you think you cannot do."

- Eleanor Roosevelt

Fortunately, all fears are learned; no one is born with fear.  Fears can therefore be unlearned, by practicing self-discipline over and over with regard to fear.  The most common fears we experience, are the fears of failure, poverty, and loss of money.  These fears cause people to avoid risk of any kind and reject opportunity when it presents itself.  So, how do we overcome our fears?

First, define the worry or fear clearly.  What exactly are you are worried or afraid of?

Second, identify the the worst possible scenario if the worry or fear really happened.

Third, accept the worst possible outcome by saying, I will survive because, it won't kill me.  (Hmmm...you should always clarify here if it can indeed kill you, if so, you may need to change the positive self-talk.)

Fourth, take steps to avoid having the worst possible outcome happen.  Act quickly and you won't have time to worry anymore.

When you practice self-discipline, and force yourself to face your worries and fears in your life, your self-esteem goes up, your self-respect improves, and your sense of personal pride grows.  You become no longer afraid!

First Impressions

It's been 8 years since the terror of 9/11.  I thought it would be appropriate to dedicate September's newsletter to sustaining self-discipline in the face of fear.

"The only real cure for fear or worry is disciplined, purposeful action in the direction of your goals.  Get so busy working on your goals or the solutions to your problems, that you have no time to be afraid, or to worry about anything." - Unknown

In August of 2008, I attended the National Speaker's Association Convention in NY City.  I was very fortunate to meet a few of the firemen from Engine 54 on my daily walk to the convention.  They are a shining example of sustaining self-discipline in the face of fear!

Practicing Solutions

Situation:

I am very uncomfortable handling any conflict with my team.  I try to avoid it, even at great cost to my patients and practice.

Solution:

Steps to resolution:

The truth is everyone is uncomfortable with conflict.  However, conflict does not go away unless it is resolved.  It builds and builds until there is so much tension and stress there is finally an explosion.

"Sweeping dirt under the carpet only creates a bump you keep tripping over."

- Rhoberta Shaler

Resolve conflicts daily to avoid, gossip, misunderstandings and tension from building.

Meet with the team member(s) involved.  Discuss where the breakdown or problem occurred.  Ask for their suggestion(s) for resolution.  Take time to  evaluate and determine a solution based on  what is in the best interests of your patients and practice.  (You may wish to think on it over night.)  Meet with the team member(s) to discuss and agree on a solution.  My clients utilize and employee agreement form, which lists the conflict, the resolution and expectations including a step-by-step action plan and time line.  The doctor/supervisor and team member(s) sign the agreement form.  File one signed copy in the team member(s) file and give one signed copy to the team member(s) involved.  It is important to hold everyone equally accountable to their agreement.
