First Impressions
There is a constant buzz that times are extremely difficult. Patients cannot afford dentistry. Some offices are barely surviving!
Yet, there are many that are not only surviving they are actually thriving! In fact, some have even had their best year yet!
So what is the difference between the practices that thrive and those who barely survive? When it comes to lifestyle, people still desire the very best and our willing to pay for it. Look at the cars people drive, homes people live in or even the TVs they watch. When it comes to utilities, they now opt for the cheapest. How do your patients perceive your practice? Do they think the services you provide enhance their lifestyle or are they only maintenance and repair.
Stop the panic over the economy and start performing your way to prosperity. Revivify and recession-proof your practice by providing your patients Life Style Dentistry!

Personal Inspiration
You may have heard the old Chinese Proverb, "If we don't change the direction we are headed, we will end up where we are going." Have you determined what direction you want to head or are you're just going to end up where you are going?
How do we change the direction we are headed if we don't like where we are going? We can by not only one-step at a time but also by one choice at a time! Mac Anderson wrote in an excerpt from Charging the Human Battery, "You are Only One Choice Away from Changing Your Life".
 Hmmm.....Think about that. Just one choice can change your life forever. Where we are right now is an accumulation of all our life choices. So to change your direction, change your choice! Knowing it is your choice puts you back in the driver's seat to your future!
I think back to some of the choices I made that created turning points in my life.
At 17 years old, graduating from high school and moving off the farm. Freedom was sharing a 12X50 mobile home trailer, with orange shag carpeting and all, with my sister and a friend! At 21 years old, leaping into a marriage that took me another 12 years to leap out! At 25 years old, my first day as a dental receptionist. I remember my first call, "Do you do bonding?" I responded "May I put you on hold for one moment please", I nervously turned and asked the manager, "what's bonding?" I am still in the industry and loving it! At 35 years old, marrying my best friend Steve (my best choice yet and counting). At 45 years old, starting Practice Solutions, my speaking and consulting company. This new chapter is so exciting I can hardly wait to get up in the morning to start my day!
We have all made choices that became turning points and changed our life. Think about the personal and professional life-changing choices you have made. If you are like most of us, some were good and some, well, not so good. We need to always remember that no matter what mistakes we have made in the past it only takes one new choice to change our direction in life! |

Vision - Have a priority hierarchy. Doctors, what do you feel is the essence of your practice? Make a list of the top 5 attributes you would like your practice to radiate and make them happen. Share your ideas with your manager and together share them with your team.
Individual Empowerment - You will inspire and motivate your team by sharing your vision. Empower your team by educating and training them for the direction you want your practice to take. Morning huddles are an ideal venue to talk about what's working and what's not and resolve any breakdowns on a daily basis.
Team Revitalization - Even the best of teams can lose their vitality when certain behaviors are left unresolved! Regular morning huddles, staff meetings and team workshops all help revitalize the team. Morning huddles ensure daily accountability. Monthly staff meetings allow your team time to address and update systems and protocols. Quarterly team workshops enable your team to clear any past grievances or baggage and work together to create future goals and objectives and once again unite as a team.
Appearance - It is the image and mindset you radiate and what your patients perceive. The practice's external shine. It is important for the entire team and practice to radiate a cohesive appearance. Think of your team like a bouquet of flowers. Each individual team member's appearance and image they radiate is like a single flower. The entire team's appearance and image is like a bouquet of flowers. The practice's appearance and image (includes everything that creates the patient's experience) is like the vase that holds the bouquet of flowers. How does the arrangement look together? Is your bouquet beautiful and arranged in an amazing vase? Or are there weeds among your flowers, thrown carelessly into a chipped and dirty glass?
Life style dentistry - We talked about the two questions to always consider before you diagnose, treatment plan, consult and treat a patient. They will change the image you radiate from repair and maintenance to an enhanced lifestyle provider. They are so Vital, that I feel they warrant reviewing once again.
1. What can I do to make my patient's life easier or better?
2. What can I do to create optimum health and wellness for my patient?
Here are some examples of what it would actually look like in your practice?
Comprehensive diagnostics, no more one-tooth exams. After all if you only check one tooth how could you possibly create optimum health and wellness for your patient?
Intraoral Camera, Diagnodent, Periodontal Screening, Oral Cancer Screening (Vizilite), Blood Pressure, etc. etc........ to be used at all wellness checks (new name for recalls and recares), evaluations and exams. Are you concerned that you will not have enough time to fit it all in?
Hmmm...How could you not have time? If you are an Enhanced Lifestyle Provider providing Life Style Dentistry these procedures are no longer optional. They are your practice's standard of care. What could be more important than to take the time to create optimum health and wellness for your patient resulting in making your patient's life easier or better!!!
