Science Fairs

Science Fairs in the U.S. became popular  in the early 1950's, and have grown into worldwide competitions where students can win awards of thousands of dollars.
3M's Young Scientist Challenge awards $50,000 annually to a student in 5th - 8th grade.  Students can progress from local fairs to regional, state and national fairs.  A top competition for high school students is the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair, with prizes up to $50,000 awarded.
There is a huge world of science out there, and kids who are curious and are encouraged to develop their scientific skills are rewarded for their accomplishments. Who knows which student will someday make the next great scientific discovery!
Dear Friends of Mad Science,
As we move into spring we couldn't be more excited about our newest after school programs and our full schedule of amazing summer camps. We have stimulating, hands-on camps full of fun and learning scheduled at 9 great locations throughout the Valley.  We've lowered our prices so we can share our love of science with as many children as possible this summer.
Be sure to join us at the Arizona Parenting Camp Jamboree at the end of the month to talk to our Mad Scientists and find out more!
Dr. ElectronScientist of the Month - Dr. Electron
Meet Mad Science's own Dr. Electron.  Not only is Chrissy an ASU student, she is President of her own company.  BioEnginuity produces assistive training devices, including a balance training platform which can help older adults improve posture and prevent falls and injuries.  Chrissy's love of science led her to participate in science fairs throughout high school, developing her original product and using science fair prize money to keep improving it.  She took her invention to science competitions around the country and as a high school senior, won a $20,000 national prize as well as receiving a full scholarship to ASU. As a high school student she had an internship in ASU's bioengineering department, and as a sophomore in bioengineering at ASU was a recipient of ASU's Edson Student Entrepreneur Initiative award.  The award included $20,000, as well as office space and support to help make Chrissy's dream a reality.  Chrissy is excited about sharing her love of science with kids through her work with Mad Science.
Cool Experiment - Fluttering Butterfly!
What you need:
-Tissue paper
-Construction paper
-Markers or pencil crayons
-Glue
-Pencil
-Balloon
-Wool Cloth

What you do:
1. Draw a butterfly on the piece of construction paper.  If you want you can decorate it with the markers and pencil crayons.
2. Trace your butterfly design on to tissue paper and cut it.
3. Take the tissue paper and glue it on to your butterfly design.  Make sure that you only put a little bit of glue right in the middle and do not get any on the wings.
4. Let the glue dry.
5. Take the balloon and rub it on your hair to charge it with static electricity.
6. Hold the charged balloon near the wings of the butterfly then move it away.
7. You should see the wings of the butterfly move.

What's going on?
The type of electricity you made when you rubbed the balloon on your hair is called static electricity.  Static electricity is produced when two things are rubbed together and there is a transfer of molecules.
