Dear Friends of Mad Science,
It's back to school time already! Our first After School Program is starting in the Chandler School District at Basha Elementary on Tuesday, August 11th and at CTA Liberty on Thursday, August 20th. For more information on our programs in Chandler, click here.
Visit our website for a complete list of Fall schools. We can't wait to get back into the classroom to bring our accredited learning experience to your children!
We're keeping Saturdays exciting with our Saturday Superstars program with Oxford Learning in Scottsdale. Drop the kids off for a stimulating morning of math and science - a full hour of each! |

Here are some of our exciting and fun-filled After School topics:
Acids & Bases - Uncover the secrets of chemistry and the effects acids and bases. Learn to test for acid rain, make your own CO2 fire extinguisher! Bugs! - Students will explore the world's most abundant animal! Insect defenses and their role in our ecosystems will be explored in fun, hands-on activities that introduce children to these fascinating creatures! Dry Ice -Turn water to ice in 30 seconds, build a giant bubbling potion, carbonate plain drinking water and create the same awesome smoke illusions used in the movies. Laser Light -Learn about light, colors, holograms and special effects. Use a real laser to create illusions and design a light show. Matter of Fact -Investigate the ingredients of the universe! Jeff Bilmes, Ph.D.
University of Washington
Jeff Bilmes is leading a team that is developing a voice-controlled mouse. So, by using a microphone you will be able to just tell your computer what to do without using your hands. Dr. Bilmes says that the computer listens to what your voice is doing about 100 times per second!
Various sounds will be commands for the pointer on the screen - like, "ah" might make the pointer go to the right on the screen, and "kk" would mean "click". The team is also using this technology to control a robotic arm. Pretty cool! Read the full story and see a video here at Science Daily. |

| Make a Gumdrop Dome |
 |
 You will need:
11 Gumdrops
25 Toothpicks
1. Make the base of your dome by connecting 5 toothpicks with gumdrops in a ring.
2. Use 2 toothpicks and 1 gumdrop to make a triangle coming up out of 2 of the base gumdrops.
3. Continue making triangles coming out of the base, until you have 5.
4. Use toothpicks to connect the gumdrops at the top of these triangles in a ring.
5. Put 1 toothpick into the top of each gumdrop, then connect all of those toothpicks with one gumdrop at the top of your dome.
6. Triangles are used by engineers for building because they are so strong. Try stacking some books on top of your dome and see how strong it is!
7. Try making a square structure out of gumdrops and toothpicks. Is it as strong as the triangles of your dome? |
