| Summer Camps |
 |

Mad Science is excited to offer two Half-Day Camps this year. Check out these spectacular summer learning experiences:
Crazy Chemworks (Grades 1-5)
Mad Science invites you to shake up a flask of fun in the lab as a junior chemist! These five half-days of chemistry are packed solid with cool reactions. Campers put on some goggles and change liquid to solid and back again. They get to handle laboratory tools, build and break molecules, and pick up some tricks on chemical changes.
Young Scientists Garden Camp (Ages 5-6)
This exciting Mad Science camp offers young scientists (age 5-6) an introduction to basic environmental science. Each session is devoted to different aspects of the garden, allowing children to progressively enrich their understanding of how living things grow and how they interact with the environment around them. During the course of each three-hour session, children will perform hands-on experiments, play themed games and enjoy a snack and story related to the session's themes. Children will also make take-home projects each day. |

Rockin' Scientist - Joseph LeDoux
Joseph LeDoux is a professor of Neuroscience and Psychology at New York University and the director of the Emotional Brain Institute in New York. He does research on memory and conditions like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. But don't think he's stuck in a lab all the time - he also performs in a rock band - the Amygdaloids. The amygdaloid nucleus is a part of the brain that plays a role in motivation and emotional behavior.

A Magnificent Message
You will need:
Hard-boiled egg
White wax crayon
A large glass Vinegar
Watch or clock Toothbrush
1. Write a message on the hard-boiled egg using the crayon.
2. Place the egg in the glass and fill it with vinegar. Make sure that the egg is completely covered with vinegar; otherwise the experiment will not work.
3. Let the egg sit in the vinegar for at least two hours.
4. Pour the vinegar out of the glass, but leave the egg in it. Add some more vinegar so the egg is completely covered and let it sit for another four hours.
5. Pour the vinegar out of the glass and rinse the egg with water.
6. Gently peel the egg and use the toothbrush to remove all of the pieces of the shell.
Explanation: This experiment is an excellent example of a chemical reaction. Where you drew a design with the crayon the vinegar was unable to dissolve the eggshell, so no chemical reaction occurred under the wax. The vinegar dissolved the entire eggshell everywhere except where the wax was. That's how you were able to write a secret message to your friends. |

| AIMS Study Guide |
 |
Strand 6 of the AIMS test deals with Earth and Space Science. Students need to understand the processes acting on the Earth and their interaction with Earth systems; and underdstand characteristics of weather and climate. For example:
Which of the following can cause erosion?
a. falling leaves
b. flowing water
c. growing grass
d. rising temperatures
Check next month's newsletter for the answer, and more information on the AIMS test.
Last month's answer:
b. mimicry
Because the Arizona Mountain Kingsnake looks like (or mimics) the poisonous Western Coral Snake, it is safer from predators.
