Side Effects & Catheter Selection

Although there is still a need for long-term data on the risks and benefits of all forms of APBI, anecdotal evidence suggests that use of the accelerated treatment reduces the physical toll on patients undergoing radiation therapy. The most common side effects of APBI include redness, bruising and soreness. However, many patients still experience more long-term, chronic effects such as persistent seroma and fibrosis.

Does Seroma Lead to Lymphedema?
Women who form a seroma following breast cancer surgery are at threefold increased risk of developing lymphedema, according to a case-controlled study presented at the annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. View poster
Of 135 breast cancer survivors (26%) participating in the study, 35 developed postsurgical symptomatic seromas requiring needle aspiration. Based on the International Criteria for Lymphedema Diagnosis, 26 of the 35 women with a seroma had severe lymphedema, 6 had moderate lymphedema, and 3 had mild lymphedema symptoms.
