At United Way of Rhode Island, our mission is to mobilize the caring power of our community to improve the lives of people in need. As a result of the ongoing effects of the economy, so many in our community are in a state of need, perhaps for the first time. Therefore, it is more important than ever that we invest our time, talent and money to make a meaningful and measurable difference in our community. This approach embodies our commitment to LIVE UNITED.
More than a fundraiser, we are working with a broad range of stakeholders to identify and resolve critical issues. Our partners include individuals, schools, government agencies, businesses, organized labor, nonprofit agencies, neighborhood associations, and the faith community. Our overarching goal is to create opportunities for people to do better for themselves and their families. For when any one of us succeeds, we all succeed. Here's one example of what we mean. United Way of Rhode Island helped to initiate Housing First, an approach to providing chronic homeless people with housing quickly and then providing additional human services as needed. United Way of Rhode Island's Community Impact Fund is a proud supporter of Housing First, which is made possible by the generosity of our donors. Housing First is a great example of how we support programs that make a meaningful and measurable impact on the lives of people in need.
In case you missed them, there were two recent news articles in the Providence Journal (http://bit.ly/bK1OMN) and the Providence Phoenix (http://bit.ly/bCRyfy) that highlight the work and impact of Housing First. I ask that you take a few moments to read them and pass them along to your family, friends and colleagues. Please help spread the word about our work and the impact that we're helping to make. As always, I am grateful for the support we receive from our donors, volunteers, community partners, and tireless staff. Transforming lives is an ambitious agenda, but together we're making an impact.
