Holiday Health and Safety Tips from CDC
This holiday season, take time to reflect, celebrate, and pay attention to your health! The CDC has important recommendations to ensure a happy holiday season, such as staying active, traveling safely, practicing food safety, preventing injury, and more.

APHA: Policy Innovation Contest

Win up to $40,000 from American Public Health Association (APHA) to develop, implement, and/or evaluate an innovative policy approach to a critical public health problem, with a focus on reducing health inequities and building policy capacity. Health departments may apply independently, or in partnership with non-profits. A letter of intent is due January 18, and applications are due January 31, 2012. Learn more.
Livability and Smart Growth Assessment Tools Database

The Livability and Smart Growth Assessment Tools Database, from the Safe States Alliance, connects local health departments with basic assessment tools and checklists to evaluate their communities' degree of livability and create safer, healthier neighborhoods. This database allows users to search by community size, assessment type, user role, and six topic areas.

National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey

Over 12 million men and women are victims of rape, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner each year, which poses a huge public health problem. The CDC recently released The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS) 2010 Summary Report, which provides data on this issue. This report is a valuable resource for public health professionals and advocates in the fields of violence prevention.

Webinar: Harm Reduction for Youth
This webinar, from the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness, discusses the harm reduction model as a means of helping homeless youth gain stability and direction. The webinar will be held Jan. 12 from 3:30-4:30 PM EST. Register online.
Up and Away and Out of Sight Campaign

This campaign, from the CDC and the Consumer Healthcare Products Association Educational Foundation, encourages parents to keep medications out of sight and reach of children, in order to prevent accidental ingestion of medications by children. Visit the campaign website.
