Overview: National Public Health Week

National Public Health Week may be over, but opportunities to promote injury and violence prevention at home, at work, on the road, and in communities continue. The American Public Health Association provides an array of online resources to help professionals and families prevent injuries and violence year-round. Specific resources include tips on home safety, a partner toolkit, and campaign posters to help health professionals spread the word.

National Summit on Gender-Based Violence Among Young People: Reading Materials

Hosted by the Department of Education on April 6-7, the National Summit on Gender-Based Violence Among Young People inspired discussions on ways to translate research into practice, expand successful programs, and design a comprehensive federal plan to address gender-based violence among our nation's youth. Reading materials from the summit-- that examine domestic violence, teen dating violence, sexual harassment and sexual assault--are now available online.

Evidence-Based Practices for Children Exposed to Violence: A Selection from Federal Databases

The U.S. Department of Justice and the Department of Health and Human Services recently released, Evidence-Based Practices for Children Exposed to Violence: A Selection from Federal Databases, a report summarizing research studies and program evaluations designed to improve outcomes for children exposed to violence. Local health departments (LHDs) may adopt the evidence-based practices referenced in the report to develop prevention services and activities for children in their communities.

New Video for Parents of Teen Drivers

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) new "Parents Are the Key" campaign video for safe teen driving presents a group of parents pledging to take steps to protect their teen drivers. LHDs can help to promote this video to parents at the local level.

NACCHO's recently updated Injury and Violence Prevention Resources webpage provides an expanded selection of resources by topic area. NACCHO intends to better connect LHDs and injury and violence prevention professionals with a variety of organizations, reports, and other resources to improve information sharing and promote injury and violence prevention activities at the local level.
Harm Reduction Tips

Guide for Harm Reduction at Work 

Published by the Open Society Foundations public health program, this publication serves as a guide to harm reduction and drug policy for organizations that employ people who use drugs. The guide addresses improving the health and welfare of employees that use drugs. Harm Reduction at Work also provides tips for reducing the risk of injury among employees who use drugs and those who do not.

Department of Justice - Community-Based Violence Prevention Demonstration Program

State and local government entities are eligible for this opportunity to establish partnerships and implement "proven, multidisciplinary, community-based strategies" to reduce youth violence. Deadline: May 23, 2011.

Safe States Alliance Annual Meeting 2011: Progress through Partnerships

April 6-8, 2011

This year, the Safe States Alliance joined the Society for Advancement of Violence and Injury Research, and the CDC in hosting "Progress through Partnerships." Strong and rewarding partnerships were recognized as key drivers of effective, evidence-based injury and violence prevention programs.

 

Celebrating Earth Day: Taking the Opportunity to Look at the Role of the Environment in Maternal and Child Health

Earth Day will be celebrated Friday, April 22. For public health practitioners working on maternal and child health, Earth Day provides an opportunity to look at the link between the environment and maternal and child health. For those looking to learn more about this link, CDC's National Environmental Public Health Tracking Network provides data and information linking environmental public health hazards to birth defects, reproductive and birth outcomes, and childhood lead poisoning.
