Overview: Emergency Preparedness & Response

The possibility of public health emergencies, such as pandemic influenza or illnesses occurring in the wake of hurricanes, tsunamis, or acts of terrorism concerns many communities. Local health departments play a key role in developing, implementing, and engaging in effective preparedness and response activities at the local level. Such measures include providing information and resources to help emergency response personnel prepare and effectively respond in the event of a crisis; tailoring health education programs accordingly; and leading communication efforts to ensure diverse audiences receive emergency risk messages in an accessible, understandable, and timely manner. Notification and Activation Chart in PPHR Toolkit

Gallatin City-County Health Department submitted a local/regional notification and activation chart for Project Public Health Ready (PPHR). The chart lists emergency phases, examples of events under each emergency phase, and possible activation activities under each emergency phase. Possible activation activities include whom to notify, how to notify, and whether initiating an Incident Command System or Joint Information Center would be necessary. NACCHO's PPHR workgroup found this tool to be adaptable to local plans, procedures, and practices and recommends this tool to LHDs.
