A Busy and Fruitful Summer
This year and this summer have offered such delightful opportunities to teach wonderful Eckerd OLLI courses, to make new friendships, give concerts and provide music for congregational services and special events, and to travel. I'm thrilled to return to Memphis to present a concert for the Sisterhood of Temple Israel on Sunday, September 9th. Then November 3-4, I'm excited to return to Augusta, GA to present a concert and lecture on the Jewish communities of China for Congregation Children of Israel.
REGISTRATION/DEPOSIT DEADLINE (August 10) is approaching for my breathtaking 2-week Shomer Shabbat Jewish Heritage Discovery of Turkey from October 15-28, 2012 that visits Istanbul, Bursa, Izmir, Ephesus, Sardis, Kaymakli and Cappadocia. If you have been considering this tour, please register immediately to guarantee your hotel and flight. It will be an extraordinary and stunning experience. And if you know others who may be interested in this tour, I would be grateful if you would share it with them.
I am also thrilled to announce my 5-day Cultural Heritage Tour of Memphis this November 8-13, 2012, in conjunction with Eckerd OLLI (Osher LIfelong Learning Institute). This tour is open to all and includes an amazing schedule of visits to Beale Street and Cotton Row, B.B. King's Blues Club, Graceland, Sun Records, the Stax Records Museum, the Rock 'n' Soul Museum, the Gibson Guitar Factory, W.C. Handy House, Danny Thomas Pavilion at St. Jude, Pink Palace Museum and much more. We'll also have a personalized historic home visit featuring my brother Alan's One & Only BBQ catering a BBQ feast and a live house concert of which I'll be a part.
Additionally, I am finalizing arrangements for a Jewish Heritage Discovery of Cuba that I will co-lead with my dear friend and colleague Rabbi Barbara Aiello of Sarasota/Italy, tentatively January 10-17, 2013. More details will follow. I also will have other exciting developments to announce very shortly.
I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming class or concert, to travel with you, and to hear from you. Wishing your remaining summer days all be beautiful ones.
Warmly, Joy · www.joyfulnoise.net

REGISTRATION/DEPOSIT DEADLINE AUGUST 10, 2012 ACT NOW to join my Breathtaking Shomer Shabbat Jewish Heritage Discovery of Turkey ✡ Oct. 15 - 28, 2012
13 days/12 nights, Istanbul, Izmir, Ephesus, Sardis, Kaymakli, Cappadocia ✡ October 15-28, 2012 ✡ $3199 Reserve IMMEDIATELY by August 10, 2012
Won't you join me on this stunning Shomer Shabbat Heritage Tour of Istanbul, Izmir, Ephesus, Sardis, Bursa, Cappadocia, and more? Please register and provide your deposit today to reserve your place for this small group tour which will allow a one-of-a-kind personalized experience of Turkey. Registration deadline is August 10. Turkey is the world's only nation to span two continents, literally a bridge between East and West. Geographically, it is the meeting point of Europe and Asia. Breathtaking and lively Istanbul is the second-largest metropolitan area in Europe and among the world's greatest cities. Straddling the Bosphorus between the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea, it is one of the world's most beautiful and busy waterways, founded in the 7th Century BCE as Byzantium, one of the most significant cities in history. Culturally, Turkey has evolved through a succession of many of the world's greatest civilizations and is a strong blend of cultures. Among many of the oldest surviving Greek, Roman, Jewish, Christian, and Ottoman Empire artifacts, we'll visit some of history's most opulent Ottoman-era synagogues and oldest Jewish settlements. Our sightseeing includes ruins of the ancient Turkish city of Thyatira - and Sardis, one of the Persian Empire's most important cities - with its Temple of Artemis, Roman Stadium, Roman baths, theatre and one of the world's oldest synagogues, Sardis Synagogue, dating from the 3rd century BCE when King Antiochus III encouraged Jews from Babylonia and other nations to move here. Excavations of this site have unearthed arguably the most impressive synagogue from antiquity in the Western Diaspora, with Greek and Hebrew inscriptions as well as mosaic floors
Our tour includes Izmir - Turkey's 3rd largest city, with its thriving Jewish community dating from the 2nd century, where we'll walk along its Street of Synagogues. Just this past December 2011, the Jewish Community of Izmir received official recognition as a legal entity by the Turkish State. The Izmir Jewish community is now has full control over its assets and 22 properties, including 18 synagogues and four stores in the city. Click to read more of this historic decision by the Turkish Directorate General for Foundations.
Two days of our tour will be devoted to exploring the captivating one-of-a-kind surreal landscape of Cappadoccia you with its fairy chimney rock formations and richly-frescoed ancient cave churches. Marvel at Kaymakli, the underground city extending eight floors below the surface of the earth.
You will be astounded by the exotic treasures of Turkey and its rich, warm Jewish history. Visit my In-depth Tour Itinerary and Details, which you may download as well. This 13 day/12 night virtually all-inclusive luxury land tour includes beautiful 4-star luxury boutique hotels, guides, transportation, activities, tour specialists and myself as Artist/Scholar-in-Residence for $3199. RESERVE AND MAKE PAYMENT IMMEDIATELY, as the registration deadline is August 10th and this is a small group tour.
