Long Time No See!

I know I know, it's been a looooooonng time since I released my last Net Gazette newsletter. My concert, teaching, and tour schedule and my commitments in the recording studio became so full and the time required for preparing and sustaining these newsletters can be quite intense. But the requests for the return of this newsletter have increased to a fever pitch! I have made the decision to fully re-commit to releasing the newsletter to you monthly. This issue will be a shorter one as I prepare to travel once again this week to my home in Tennessee as well as to visit my beloved alma mater Stephens College. For those of you who will be attending the Stephens Reunion this month, I greatly look forward to seeing you there. I will release a new issue at the beginning of May as well and will continue with monthly issues once again.

The time since I last communicated with you has been immensely active, busy, rewarding, filled with concerts and classes, travels, pleasures and some losses. In the last 2 years I released 3 new recordings, including two that are the first within a new line of one-of-a-kind inspirational greeting card/CD's. Many of you are aware that my wonderful mother, Bess, passed away this past November just shy of turning 90. I have to admit that life hasn't been the same since and there have been many emotional adjustments. This week I return to Memphis for the first time in my life without seeing her, and some tears fall as I write this to you. Much has continued to keep me active with music and work, and I have felt your heartfelt support along the way. Through your communication on Facebook, Twitter, and other networking sites as well as by e-mail, as well as through seeing you at my concerts and out and about, I feel your presence in my life.

As I re-start this newsletter, I am updating my e-mail lists and would be grateful for your subscription updates if you have a change of e-mail address. The easiest way is via the link at the bottom of this newsletter, which will allow you to update your subscription in any way you desire. You may adjust e-mail address or choices of newsletter, or you may unsubscribe if you prefer. Or you may reply to this email and let me know of the changes you desire to your subscription and I'll adjust them within the system.

Future issues will return to featuring links, news, and the many updates as I have provided in previous newsletter. This one serves as a brief update for my Heritage Tours - including a breathtaking 2-week Shomer Shabbat Jewish Heritage Discovery of Turkey coming up this October 15-28, 2012 that visits Istanbul, Bursa, Izmir, Ephesus, Sardis, Kaymakli and Cappadocia. The reservation deadline for that tour is August 15, 2012. Details are below.

You'll also find here a quick update of classes, concerts and special events I am presenting this summer in the Tampa Bay Area, including a wide selection of Summer 2012 Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) courses at Eckerd College from May through September 2012.

I look forward to traveling with you and to seeing you at an upcoming concert, class, or in congregation. Let me wish you a fun, joyous, and discovery-filled spring and summer.

Warmly, Joy · www.joyfulnoise.net

credt cardBe swept away by the wonders of Turkey and its rich Jewish Heritage on this Shomer Shabbat Heritage Tour of Istanbul, Izmir, Cappadocia, and much more. Turkey is the only country to span two continents, literally a bridge between East and West. Geographically, it is the meeting point of Europe and Asia. Culturally, Turkey has evolved through a succession of many of the world's greatest civilizations and is a strong blend of cultures. Among many of the oldest surviving Greek, Roman, Jewish, Christian, Sufi, and Ottoman Empire artifacts, we'll visit some of the world's most opulent Ottoman-era synagogues and some of the planet's oldest Jewish settlements. Our sightseeing includes the ruins of the ancient Turkish city of Thyatira, and Sardis, one of the most important cities of the Persian Empire with its Temple of Artemis, Roman Stadium, Roman baths, theatre and one of the world's oldest synagogues, Sardis Synagogue, dating from the 3rd century BCE when King Antiochus III encouraged Jews from Babylonia and other nations to move to this city. VicunaVicunaExcavations of this site have unearthed arguably the most impressive synagogue from antiquity in the Western Diaspora, with Greek and Hebrew inscriptions as well as mosaic floors.

Our tour also includes Izmir with its thriving Jewish community dating to the 2nd century, where we'll walk along its Street of Synagogues. Just this past December 2011, the Jewish Community of Izmir - Turkey's third largest city - received official recognition as a legal entity by the Turkish State. Following the decision, the Izmir Jewish community is now legally considered a foundation with full control over its assets and 22 immovable properties, including 18 synagogues and four stores in the city. Click to read more of this historic decision by the Turkish Directorate General for Foundations.

We'll spend 2 days exploring and being captivated by the one-of-a-kind surreal landscape of Cappadoccia you with its fairy chimney rock formations and richly-frescoed churches carved from caves. You'll marvel at Kaymakli, the underground city extending eight floors below the surface of the earth. You will be astounded by the exotic treasures of Turkey and its rich, warm Jewish history.

Joy's Neat News & Recommended Reading

I love to share discoveries I make on the internet as well as news of friends and colleagues. If you have neat news you would like me to share, please email me to tell me about it! This column will continue in the next edition (May 2012) of Joy's Net Gazette.

SPECIAL PREVIEW ANNOUNCEMENT!! However, I will take this moment to put out a teaser for a special tour I am preparing tentatively for November 8-13, 2012 to Memphis, Tennessee. Yes, it's my old stomping ground, the place where I was born & reared as they say, and I LOVE to share Memphis with everyone I know. Since teaching a session on Memphis for Eckerd College OLLI this past season as a prelude to the arrival of the hit Broadway musical "Memphis" in Clearwater, I received so much interest in city that this September, I will be teaching an expanded 3-session course on the River City and its incredible history, culture, musical legacy, and citizens. The course will be offered in as a prelude to this exciting and exceptional tour, tentatively this November.

Together we'll tour Beale Street, the downtown and river bluff, the W.C. Handy home, Sun Records, Graceland, Stax Records, the Rock'n'Soul Museum, the Ornamental Metal Museum, Center for Southern Folklore, Peabody Hotel, the historic Cotton Exchange, the National Civil Rights Museum* (*NOTE: as available, since the National Civil Rights museum is expected to be under renovation then), the historic Pink Palace Museum and more. We'll discover the city's native American history and culture, the history of the river port, the gifts of St. Jude Hospital and world-renowned medical establishments of Memphis inspired by trauma and tragedy of the Yellow Fever epidemics of the 19th century, and much more. As we stay in luxury comfort in the downtown area, you'll have close walking access to many historic sights as well as the nightly entertainment downtown and Beale Street as you desire to enjoy it.

This tour is being prepared and will be announced shortly. It will be offered through Eckerd College Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) but will be open to all on a first-come first-served basis. Additionally, local Memphis residents may join the day tours only if desired. I'm thrilled to be offering this opportunity and looking forward to sharing it with you!

MORE TO COME!
