Introduction by Joy Katzen-Guthrie, '80 Class Agent

"Love Is All There Is."

These words from Lennon-McCartney are so simple, yet so profound. As we rush to complete our shopping, travel, gift-giving, work, and year-end finances, it is so easy to become caught up in all there is "to do." But we do what we do because we are inspired by love ... of our families, our work, and one another. It is the small things we do for others that make our lives extraordinary.

I wish all of you warm and fulfilling Holy Days and a healthy new year.
May 2008 bring all you most desire.

Joy
Message from Stephens President Wendy B. Libby
Dear Alumnae,

Joy has already shared with you the great news about our re-accreditation visit, but it's so thrilling and important for Stephens' future that I can't help but summarize it again!

Over the past year and a half, the College has been preparing a "self-study" report (viewable at http://www.stephens.edu/academics/nca/) for the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association, our accrediting body. The culmination of this self-study is a site visit, which occurred Nov. 5-7, 2007, wherein four professionals from other institutions came to campus to evaluate various aspects of the College. Their purpose is to ensure that we are delivering on our mission and following appropriate codes of conduct.

On Nov. 7, the four-member team delivered their preliminary assessment; we chose to open this meeting to the entire campus community. The outcome was this: they recommended that Stephens receive re-accreditation for another 10 years - the maximum achievable period of time, which is increasingly rare in higher education today. Team members commended Stephens on the "cohesive sense of community" that is developing during the College's turnaround.

Of course, this is where Stephens alumnae and friends can pat themselves on the back! We are grateful for this spirit of community you have all helped nurture - and prouder still for our actions to be recognized and extolled by others! Thank you.

You will soon see another Ideal Connection in your mailbox; this issue contains our Annual Report where we thank our many donors and highlight all the things their gifts have inspired. Our Smart, Strong, Savvy. Stephens campaign is going strong, with many smart, strong and savvy alumnae and friends who believe in Stephens and want to share her magic with more generations of Stephens Women.

We are truly grateful this holiday season. Students returned from Thanksgiving Break on Nov. 26; classes ended Dec. 7 with exams the following week. On Dec. 9, we hosted a December Commencement complete with caps
and gowns in Lela Raney Wood Hall's Kimball Ballroom, despite the ice and snow. We are all appreciating the holiday break and spending time with friends and family!

Take care and enjoy your holidays,
Wendy B. Libby, Ph.D.

Stephens Burrall Memories

Dear Stephens Alumnae,

This semester, St. Louis area freshmen at Stephens received a copy of Stephens Burrall Mem'ries, thanks to alumnae who helped with the cost of the books. The purpose of the Burrall intergenerational project is to establish a connection between freshmen and alumnae and to give the freshmen knowledge of the historical significance of Stephens' religious past.

I was delighted to receive an email recently from Jennifer Brady, a freshman, and she has given me permission to share her comments. She wrote, "I received the Burrall book and it was fantastic to be able to read about all the ladies that have attended here. I wish we still have a denomination at the school or some sort of religious affiliation. I think it would teach a lot to the young women here. The book actually helped me in my decision to stay at Stephens. In the beginning, I was having a bit of a difficult time adjusting, and I thought that if this many women still love Stephens, and give credit to making them who they are today, then Stephens is right for me. I feel that Stephens will help me find myself, and make a contribution to society."

If you haven't shared your favorite memory of Vespers, Evening Prayer, or other Burrall activity, please send it to me by January 15, 2008. My goal is to have 175 alumnae memories for the 2008-175th anniversary edition. YOU can make a difference.

Thank you,
Happy Holidays!

LESLIE WHITE CLAY '79, clayjlaw@mindspring.com, Dallas, TX

Happy, happy Holiday wishes to each and everyone of you from the White/Clay house! I don't want to bore all of you with the mundane details of a cheesy holiday letter, so in my best business writing style, let's go with bullet points!
  • Jeff - still working at the Army Air Force Exchange in the programming division
  • Leslie - started new job in April as the Executive Director of The Classics Theatre & Art for Children. As a fundraiser, she "trolls for dollars" for the arts.   Check us out at www.myclassics.org.  Still singing in two choirs - check one out by googling Sacred Song Dallas.
  • Alex - the oldest.  History major, concentrating in Middle Eastern Studies, still an Aggie, but taking a few months off school, back home, working at Barnes & Noble and taking his foreign language requirements at a local community college.
  • Will - the tall one in the picture. Sophomore mechanical engineering major at University of Texas, loving living in Austin, hopes to study abroad in Sweden his senior year, so is taking a fast track Swedish course where he gets 6 hours in one semester.  Had a couple of classes this fall that he was just grateful to survive.  At this point is planning on a career in patent law.
  • Lue and Larry - (Leslie's parents).  Still loving being in Dallas.  Larry straightens teeth 2 days a week and teaches at Baylor Dental school one morning a week.  Lue had a hip replacement this fall.  Larry needs to have a 3rd one done, but is fighting it.
That's the Clay household in a nutshell.  Leslie turned 50 this November and has now gone middle age crazy and is driving a two seater, black, stick shift, Pontiac Solstice. Jeff is thrilled with her car choice and said if she just owned a liquor store he would be a very, very happy man! At this point I am planning on attending the 175th reunion of Stephens in April because I figure I probably won't be around for the 200th!!! LOL!  Lisa Harmeyer Ledbetter wants me to drive up in the "Batmobile" (new car) so we can troll fraternity row as "cougars." Those of you who live in the DFW Metroplex - we need to get together for lunch sometime. Those of you who don't, give us a holler when you get this way! Would love to see you all.

Hugs, kisses and best wishes of the season to you all!
Leslie, Jeff, Alex, Will, Spike the dog, Bogger and Hunnicutt the cats!

LYNDA CLUGSTON WEBSTER '78, lynda@websterconsulting.com

I just returned from a Stephens College board meeting so incredibly excited about the school, the students, the leadership and overall direction the school is taking. If you have not been back recently, I encourage you to try and visit the school during reunion or some other time. The accreditation board just left after three days on campus and their response is reflected in the message from Dr. Libby - which I think says it all about where our school is right now - and where it could be in five or ten years with our collective help. President Libby and her team have done a Herculean job in not only saving a sinking ship but they have set a course for Stephens that is innovative, forward thinking and very exciting.

There is still much more to do. Some buildings like LWR, the Visitors Center, etc. are just beautiful- - first rate. Others places have been patched together but need real attention. Those of us who were in Searcy should know that our dorm needs work ... the exciting thing is that the dorm is now one of the school's 'doggy dorms' which means students can bring their dogs to live with them! Wish we could have done that! I checked out Pillsbury too - the common entry area has been improved and one floor seems better - but my old floor still has the same old carpet, etc. Equipment in some areas such as radio, tv, film and others needs to be updated. And, as the student body grows, the need for excellent full time faculty grows, etc. You get the picture.

So, check out the NEW and exciting Stephens and think seriously about coming for April's 24-27, 2008 reunion!!  I encourage each of you to do what you can with your time, talents and resources to help keep the momentum going! I am confident you'd be proud of what our school has again become and excited about what it can continue to be! I hope to see you all in April!  My best, Lynda Clugston Webster

PS  If you have not received anything from the school lately, they have most likely lost you! I hope you will email your address and phone number to Shannon Walls if you have  moved or have not heard from the school in over a year. You don't want to miss the mailings about reunion or other good things happening on campus!

December graduates receive degrees

The first ever formal December Commencement ceremony was held on Sunday, Dec. 9 in the Kimball Ballroom of Lela Raney Wood Hall. Undergraduate and master's degrees were conferred upon nearly 30 Stephens College students. In the past, an informal graduate reception was held for December graduates, who also were invited to attend the traditional May commencement ceremony. A complimentary brunch for graduates, family members and the Stephens community followed the event. Vicki Russell, associate publisher of the Columbia Daily Tribune and member of the Stephens College Board of Trustees, gave the keynote address. The undergraduate speaker was Hannah Vonder Haar, who graduated cum laude with a B.S. in Education. She plans to work as a substitute teacher in Columbia before entering Stephens' Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction program in June. Andrea Franklin '89, an adjudicator for the state of Georgia, was selected as the the Division of Graduate and Continuing Studies representative. However, she was unable to attend the ceremony due to the icy weather conditions. Franklin, who received her M.B.A., has a B.F.A. in Fashion Merchandising from Stephens. Click to read more

Winter wonderland
The Stephens College campus was blanketed with its first snowfall of the season on Dec. 6. Last year, Columbia saw the largest 24-hour snowfall accumulation-15 inches-since 1995.

Author Jane Yolen gives lecture

Jane Yolen, author of "Owl Moon" and "Briar Rose," among many other stories, presented a Roblee lecture titled "The Morality of Fairy Tales" on Nov. 28. Approximately 140 people attended the lecture and a Q&A for teen writers that followed the event. Yolen's lecture was part of a five-day residency program that included other lectures, storytelling performances, gallery exhibits and informal talks in venues throughout downtown Columbia. Yolen writes fantasy and science fiction for children and adults. Her books and stories have won numerous awards, including the Caldecott Medal, and she has been called the Hans Christian Andersen of America and the Aesop of the 20th century.

Stephens' 175th anniversary plans
Stephens community members are busy planning for Stephens' 175th anniversary in 2008. A campus community kick-off event, "Happy Birthday, Stephens!," will begin the year of celebration on Jan. 31 in the Kimball Ballroom of Lela Raney Wood Hall. Highlights will be a "Queen Cake"-a spin-off of the Mardi Gras King Cake-shaped in numerals to recognize our 175th year; a special video created by the Department of Broadcast and Digital Film; and the beginning of a "Race to 175 treasure hunt," that tests participants' knowledge of Stephens history. Birthday party attendees will come bearing gifts (representing each department/office/residence hall in 2008). The gifts will be put into a time capsule, sealed later in the spring and opened on our 200th anniversary. Other events will be held throughout the year.

New Stephens alumnae directory
Stephens College has partnered with PCI to publish a new directory. The company is in the process of phoning alumnae to ensure accurate information is published in the alumnae directory, which will showcase the College's 175th anniversary. There are several packages available for purchase. The directories will be mailed next fall. To contact PCI with changes in directory information or for questions about your order, please call Customer Service at 1-800-982-1590.

Save the Date: Reunion 2008
Stephens will celebrate her 175th birthday during the annual Reunion on Friday, April 25 and Saturday, April 26, 2008. All alumnae are welcomed back to campus for this special event, with classes ending in "3" and "8" receiving special recognition of Stephens' 175th birthday. On April 24, special activities are planned to celebrate members of the Class of 1958 and the Classic Classes. All alumnae who were honored as "Ten Ideals" during their time at Stephens also are invited to return for a special celebration to renew our commitment to one of Stephens' most treasured traditions.Watch your mail for additional registration details and visit www.stephens.edu/alumnae for ongoing updates.

Stephens alumna makes national headlines
Comedienne Karith Foster '96 has made national headlines after signing as a cast member of the rehabbed "Imus in the Morning," a nationally syndicated radio show. Foster is one of two black comedians hired by the show to help continue the national discussion on race relations sparked by Imus's racially and sexually charged on-air remarks against the women of the Rutgers basketball team last spring. Foster graduated from Stephens with a broadcast journalism degree. Click to read the Associated Press story.

New graduate creates winning business
Stephens alumna Ashley Steffes, who received her degree in fashion marketing and management in December (pictured right with President Wendy Libby), has created a unique line of all-natural bath products called Bath Cocktails that helps women feel better about themselves both emotionally and physically. For her entrepreneurial efforts, Steffes recently won the $1,000 Build-A-Business Challenge, sponsored by Columbia's Inside Columbia magazine and UMB Bank. She was among three winning finalists who received $1,000 in business start-up money, exposure for their products or services in Inside Columbia magazine throughout the year, and the guidance of Columbia business leaders. Updated Visitors Center rooms
Stephens unveiled seven updated guest rooms in the Visitors Center in late October. The project, which also included office space renovations on the main floor below, was made possible with a gift by the Center's original benefactor, Alyce Roberts Cheatham '40. Conferencing and Events, and Graduate & Continuing Studies are moving into their new office space this month. Guest rooms vary in size, offering twin or king beds and a private bath. Two suites include an additional full sleeper sofa. Amenities include a flat-screen TV with cable, free wireless Internet access, a coffeemaker and mini refrigerator, a hair dryer and a full-size ironing board and iron. For more information or to book a room, please contact Conferencing and Events at (573) 876-7257 or mmarks@stephens.edu.

Final Thoughts

The deepest principle of human nature is the craving to be appreciated.  ~William James

There is more hunger for love and appreciation in this world than for bread.  ~Mother Teresa

I live in the space of thankfulness - and I have been rewarded a million times over for it. I started out giving thanks for small things, and the more thankful I became, the more my bounty increased. That's because what you focus on expands, and when you focus on the goodness in your life, you create more of it. Opportunities, relationships, even money flowed my way when I learned to be grateful no matter what happened in my life.   ~Oprah Winfrey

Life is like an ever-shifting kaleidoscope - a slight change, and all patterns alter.  ~Sharon Salzberg

Everybody can be great ... because anybody can serve. You do not have to have a college degree to serve. You do not have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need to have a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love. ~Martin Luther King
